FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Senior
Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and sophomore
Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) represented the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team at the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington over the weekend (Oct. 2-4).
Esztergomi faced
Lorenzo Neri of The Catholic University of America, an opponent Esztergomi faced three weeks earlier at No. 1 singles in a dual match at Catholic (Sept. 13), in the Championship singles main draw Round of 64. Neri posted a second win over Esztergomi, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Esztergomi then dropped an 8-1 pro set to
Brian Yi of Johns Hopkins University in the Championship singles consolation Round of 32.
Nelson battled Swarthmore College's
Winston Zhang in the B3 singles main draw Round of 16, falling 6-1, 6-3. Nelson owned a 3-2 lead in the second set before Zhang won four straight games for the match triumph.
Nelson's final singles match of the regionals pitted him against
Rithik Manchala of Mary Washington in the B3 singles consolation quarterfinals. Manchala pulled off an 8-3 pro set victory.
Additionally, Esztergomi and Nelson teamed up for doubles action in the B2 doubles main draw. The duo first faced
Elias Alkio and
Johnny Haase of Stevens Institute of Technology. St. Mary's College pulled within 6-5 before Alkio and Haase pulled away for the 8-5 win.
Esztergomi and Nelson then went up against Shenandoah University's
Artem Babaiev and
Neal Love in the consolation quarterfinals, falling 8-3.
