PHILADELPHIA – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team placed third in the 10-team field at the Philadelphia Cross Classic Saturday morning (Sept. 6). The 8K race was hosted by Thomas Jefferson University at the Belmont Plateau.
St. Mary's College tallied 130 points among a field that featured five NCAA Division II programs. The Seahawks bested fellow Division III programs, Immaculata University (sixth) and Albright College (10th).
How It Happened
- First-year Brandon Smoot (Hanover, Md./DeMatha) led SMCM this morning as Smoot placed 14th out of 80 runners in 30:41.19. This is the first time that Smoot is the first Seahawk to cross the finish line.
- After being the fourth scorer last week, sophomore Blake Carberry (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) came in next, taking 22nd in 31:56.90.
- Senior Kelly Byrne (Rockville, Md./Rockville) held steady as the team's third scorer, posting a 27th-place finish in 32:42.81.
- Junior Noah Fisher (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) moved up a spot as Fisher crossed the finish line fourth for St. Mary's College, placing 35th in 34:09.14.
- For the first time this season, sophomore Jack Kuta (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) scored for the Seahawks as Kuta took 46th in 35:16.52.
