St. Mary’s College Men’s Tennis Makes Return Trip to Championship Match

Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team is headed to their fifth consecutive United East Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament final match. No. 2 seed St. Mary's College (10-6) notched a 4-0 win over No. 3 seed Penn College (8-7) to earn a spot in the championship match on Sunday, May 3.
 
On Sunday, the Seahawks will take on the winner from the No. 1 seed Penn State Harrisburg (9-7) – No. 4 seed Penn State Berks (7-5) semifinal match, which takes place tomorrow, Friday, May 1 at 5 pm. The title match will be played at the Hempfield recCenter in Landisville, Pa., at 10 am.
 
Harrisburg is the two-time defending United East champion while SMCM claimed the conference title in 2022 and 2023 and finished as the runner-up the last two seasons.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
  • First-years Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) and Nate Willoughby (Edgewater, Md./South River) notched a 6-1 win over Valentino Barillaro and Lumortor Kpangbai at the No. 3 pairing.
  • Junior Andrew Hand (Huntington, Md./Huntington) and sophomore Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) came together to lock up the doubles point and a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 victory over Avery Hawk and Joshua Myers at the No. 2 spot.
 
SINGLES
  • Cron made it a 2-0 match with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Matt Williams at the No. 3 position.
  • Hand blanked Kpangbai at the No. 5 spot to stretch the advantage to 3-0.
  • Sophomore Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) locked up the win for St. Mary's College with a 6-0, 6-0 over Myers at No. 1 singles.
