St. Mary's City, Md. - For the third straight
season, fifth-year head coach Megan Block has
guided the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to the
Capital Athletic Conference semifinals. The second-seeded
Seahawks notched a 5-0 shutout victory over seventh-seeded Hood
College in the CAC Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon.
St. Mary's (11-4) will now host the No. 3 seed, Wesley College,
in the conference semifinals on Halloween Wednesday at 2:30 in
Seahawk Stadium. Wesley was a 1-0 winner over sixth-seeded
York (Pa.) College today as well. Wednesday's other semifinal
match-up will feature top-seeded Salisbury University and No. 5
seed University of Mary Washington, who was a 1-0 winner over
fourth-seeded Villa Julie College today.
Sophomore midfielder Amanda Bramble (Easton,
Md./Easton) started the Seahawk scoring at 8:05 as Bramble pushed
in a loose ball. Senior forward Ali Femi
(Easton, Md./Easton) followed suit with her team-leading
12th goal of the season at 15:10, giving the Hawks a 2-0
lead.
Senior captain Amy Skrickus (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) continued the scoring 15 minutes later when Skrickus
fired in a shot off an assist by freshman forward Katie
Cox (Frederick, Md./Linganore). St. Mary's would
take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
SMCM tacked on two more in the second stanza as junior
midfielder Emily Smithson (Midlothian, Va./James
River) corralled senior defender Halley Pack's
(Frederick, Md./Frederick) pass and rifled in a shot into the lower
left corner at 53:18.
Rounding out the scoring was junior midfielder Kerri
Smith (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) who tallied her first
career goal at 59:42 when Smith deflected freshman Caitlin
Godstrey's (Rockville, Md./Wootton) pass into the circle.
St. Mary's boasted a 38-5 shot advantage as well as a 17-10
penalty corner margin. Hood (3-12) recorded four defensive
saves, including three by sophomore Sarah Balukoff
(Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
Senior Emily Richards (Silver Spring,
Md./Springbrook) and freshman Emma Lauhoff (Wayne,
Pa./Radnor) split time equally in goal in combining for the team's
seventh shutout. Lauhoff had three saves for the
Seahawks. The Blazers' Ashley Saylor
(Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) ended the day with 14 saves.
