Fredericksburg, Va. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team were no match
for No. 5/7 University of Mary Washington as the Seahawks suffered
a 77-43 road loss Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference
action.
The conference-leading Eagles (12-1, 5-0 CAC) opened up the game
with a 14-0 run before flying to a 34-8 advantage - their biggest
lead of the half - with 6:52 left in the first half. St.
Mary's went 0-for-9 from the field in the contest's first six
minutes before sophomore guard Steph Saint-Aubin
(Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) ended the scoring drought for the
Seahawks with a lay-up at 13:53.
After a pair of free throws by SMCM freshman forward
Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) put the
game at 34-12 at 6:21, neither team connected on a field goal until
a lay-up by Katy Larson at 1:38. Mary
Washington owned a 38-14 margin at halftime.
Ashton Mitchell led all players with 10 points
and eight rebounds, while Hurte and Saint-Aubin paced the Seahawks
(7-5, 3-3 CAC) with four points apiece. In the first half,
St. Mary's made only five field goals in 28 attempts for a
17.9 field goal percentage, while the Eagles shot 43.6%.
Mary Washington continued its dominance in the second half,
leading by 31 or more points for the last 17:33 of the game.
Three Eagle players posted double digit numbers with Larson
heading the trio with her 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Mitchell finished the afternoon with a double-double on 14 points
and 10 boards, while Liz Hickey also had a
double-double on 10 points and a game-high 13 caroms and added a
game-best five blocks.
Saint-Aubin was the only Seahawk in double figures as she
recorded her second consecutive double-double on 10 points and a
career-high 11 rebounds. Hurte and junior forward
Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) each
contributed nine points, while Scott hauled in nine boards and
dished out a team-high three assists.
St. Mary's hopes to snap its two-game losing streak this Monday,
January 14 when the Seahawks host Trinity (D.C.) University at 7:00
in non-conference play.
