St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland field hockey team honored its five seniors in fine
fashion Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks notched a 6-0 conference
shutout over Hood College amidst the festivities of the Hawktober
Festival.
Prior to the start of today's contest, the five Seahawk seniors
were recognized for their accomplishments on and off the field:
forward Claire Leffler (Brookeville,
Md./Sherwood), defender Abby Locke (Bethesda,
Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), forward Emily Norris
(Timonium, Md./Dulaney), midfielder Kerri Smith
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), and midfielder Emily
Smithson (Richmond, Va./James River). These seniors
have thus far established a 43-21 four-year record, including a
17-6 mark in Capital Athletic Conference action.
St. Mary's (7-6, 5-1 CAC) notched three goals in each half en
route to the 6-0 blanking of Hood (1-11, 0-6 CAC).
Smithson led the way with two goals, while
Norris tallied a goal and an assist.
Leffler, junior midfielder Amanda
Bramble (Easton, Md./Easton) and freshman midfielder
Sam Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase)
each picked up one goal.
The Seahawks' first three goals were all long balls that found
the corners. Bramble netted the game-winner
at 9:10 as she fired in a shot from the top right of the circle
that ricocheted off the far left post into the lower left
corner. Smithson then recorded back-to-back
goals at 14:08 and 34:42 to give SMCM a 3-0 lead at halftime.
It was fitting that Leffler scored her first
career goal on the day that was meant to honor her for her
contributions to the Seahawk field hockey program.
Norris assisted on Leffler's goal
which gave the Seahawks a 4-0 advantage at 46:06.
Locke tallied a goal at 50:27 and
Norris added one at 58:59 to make the final,
6-0.
St. Mary's outshot the Blazers, 23-3, and posted an 18-4
advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) made
two stops in 59 minutes of play, while freshman Caitlin
Cromer (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) picked up one in 11
minutes of relief.
Senior Jen Lacy (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley)
made 10 saves in the loss for Hood.
St. Mary's looks to continue their winning ways tomorrow when
the Seahawks host No. 19 Christopher Newport University in
non-conference action at 3:00 in Seahawk Stadium.
