Game Program

St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team clawed back from a 17-point deficit but came up just short as Catholic University left the Athletics & Recreation Center Arena with a 72-68 non-conference victory Tuesday night.

The Seahawks (1-2) posted a 26-11 run in the game's final eight minutes to erase a 17-point setback and pull within 70-68 with six seconds left on the clock; however, St. Mary's was unable to foul on the Cardinals' in-bounds play and junior Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) passed up the ball to sophomore Jenn Canale (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) for the lay-up at the buzzer.

Sophomore Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) led the Cardinal offense as Peterson poured in a game-high 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting, including three three-pointers from downtown, and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Nine points from senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) helped the Seahawks boast a 19-9 advantage with 11:42 remaining in the first half.  Then Peterson tallied seven points in a 12-2 Catholic push to knot the game at 21-21 with 6:36 to go but St. Mary's regained a four-point lead following a 6-2 spurt.  Sophomore guard Kerri Confrey (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) put the Cardinals back on top with a jumper at 00:21, giving Catholic a 31-28 halftime lead.

Scott and Peterson both had 11 points at the half to lead their respective teams.  The Seahawks out-rebounded Catholic, 29-11, in the first half thanks in part to senior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) who hauled in nine of her career-best 14 caroms in the first 20 minutes.

St. Mary's offense was stymied in the first 12 minutes of the second half as Catholic used a 28-14 start to enhance its three-point halftime lead to 17.  Peterson had 12 points in the run.  The Cardinals finished the night shooting 38.2% from the floor and going 11-of-15 from the free throw line.

The Seahawks controlled the glass as St. Mary's posted a 56-34 rebound margin, but committed 32 turnovers to Catholic's 16.

Sophomore center Lauren McPeak (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) added 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six blocks to the Cardinal cause, while Canale contributed a dozen and Confrey dished out a game-best five assists and chipped in seven points.

Scott finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Murphy and junior center Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) both registered double-doubles as Murphy notched 15 points and 14 rebounds and Wenger had 10 and 10.

The Seahawks return to action this Friday, November 21 as St. Mary's hosts Washington (Md.) College in non-conference action at 7:00.
