Mustangs Gallop Past St. Mary's, 12-1

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Six runs in the fourth inning allowed the Villa Julie College Mustangs to blow the game wide open and post a 12-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Friday afternoon in baseball action.

The Mustangs (3-1-1, 1-0 CAC) enjoyed their first CAC victory ever as the 2008 campaign marks VJC's first year as a conference member.  Four Mustangs connected on a pair of hits in helping VJC to the win.

Junior catcher Griffin Stewart (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) paced the Mustangs with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, including three RBI and two runs.  Infielders Brett Steele (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), Buddy Breidenbaugh (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), and sophomore outfielder George Papuchis (Damascus, Md./Good Counsel) all went 2-for-5.

Stewart notched a two-run single through the left side with one out in the third inning to give Villa Julie a 4-1 lead.

Steele doubled down the left field line and drove in three runs with one out in the fourth, increasing the Mustang lead to 7-1.

Sophomore outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) scored the lone Seahawk run in the bottom of the first inning putting St. Mary's up 1-0.  Killebrew had reached base on a VJC error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman infielder Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown).  He then stole third before crossing home plate on senior infielder Jay Benedetti's (Laurel, Md./Hammond) ground out to shortstop.

St. Mary's (2-4, 0-1 CAC) had five different players register a single as senior right-hander Brian Briggs (Laurel, Md./Hammond) dropped to 1-1 on the season, giving up five earned runs in 3.1 innings.  Briggs walked three and struck out two.

Junior lefty Wade Keenan (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) remained perfect thus far with a 3-0 mark, pitching six innings with only three hits allowed.  Keenan struck out four.

The Seahawks will have a shot to redeem themselves tomorrow as St. Mary's entertains the Mustangs for two more games in order to complete the three-game conference series at the Hawk's Nest.  First pitch is slated for noon.
