St. Mary's Pounds Villa Julie, 9-2 and 24-10

St. Mary's City, Md. - After falling 12-1 the day before to Villa Julie College, the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team extracted revenge Saturday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from Villa Julie, 9-2 and 24-10, in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).  With today's two wins, the Seahawks claimed a 2-1 mark in the conference series with the CAC newcomer.

St. Mary's (4-4, 2-1 CAC) will return to action tomorrow when the Seahawks entertain McDaniel College in a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is set for noon.  With the loss, Villa Julie drops to 3-3-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Game One: SMC 9, VJC 2

The Seahawks used three multiple run innings to claim a 9-2 win in the first game which was only seven innings.  SMCM jumped out to a 3-0 lead following the first inning of play and then owned a 7-2 margin after five innings.  The Seahawks ended the contest with two runs in the seventh.

Senior infielder Jay Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond) posted a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two runs and an RBI, while junior infielder Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Senior right-hander Ryan D'Antuono (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) pitched a complete game en route to improving to 1-1 on the season.  D'Antuono struck out 10 and only walked one.

Five different Mustangs had singles in the loss.  Senior Buddy Breidenbaugh (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) took the loss on the mound, dropping to 0-2 on the young season.  Breidenbaugh gave up five earned runs I 3.1 innings of work with two walks and a strikeout.

Game Two: SMC 24, VJC 10

Twenty-two of 35 players stepped on the diamond for the Seahawks in the nightcap which turned out to be a slugfest.  St. Mary's and the Mustangs combined for 41 hits, 34 runs, and 10 errors in the nine-inning match-up.

The Seahawks scored at least one run in each inning and started the nightcap by exploding for seven runs in the first inning.

Freshmen Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) and Matt Streich (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) and sophomore outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) each connected on a pair of doubles in St. Mary's 14-run victory.

Baden finished the second game batting 5-for-6 with four runs and three RBI, while sophomore infielder Jay Turen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Streich was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.  Both Killebrew and Benedetti went 3-for-5 and each scored two runs and drove one in.

Sophomore Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) struck out five and gave up seven runs in five innings pitched en route to a 2-0 record on the season.

Junior infielder Brett Steele (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) paced Villa Julie with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate which included a triple, two runs and an RBI.  Breidenbaugh, senior designated hitter Alex Laddbush (Mercerburg, Pa./Mercerburg), junior catcher Griffin Stewart (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), and sophomore outfielder George Papuchis (Damascus, Md./Good Counsel) all registered two hits.

Stewart and Papuchis each had an extra-base hit, while Papuchis recorded three RBI.

Junior right-hander Ryan Baione (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) suffered the loss for the Mustangs as Baione (0-1) gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits in just two innings pitched.
