Cocoa, Fla. - The St. Mary's
College of Maryland baseball team dropped its third straight as the
Seahawks gave away a 6-2 lead and New England College rallied for
the 10-8 non-conference victory down in Florida Wednesday morning.
After five innings, the Seahawks (6-8) owned a 6-2 advantage as
St. Mary's capitalized on six hits, including one RBI double by
freshman outfielder Bobby Corton (Owings Mills,
Md./Calvert Hall), and three Pilgrim errors.
New England's (3-2) comeback rally began in the top of the sixth
inning as the Pilgrims notched four runs to knot the game at 6 all.
The Pilgrims earned their second lead (7-6) of the game as
Joe Clark singled to drive in Jimmy
Lauzon in the seventh.
However, St. Mary's answered right back in its half of the
seventh when sophomore catcher Trey Cole (Chevy
Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) doubled to left center to score
sophomore outfielder Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall,
Md./La Plata).
NEC sealed the win in the eighth as the Pilgrims tacked on three
more runs. New England took advantage of three Seahawk
errors, scoring three runs on two hits.
SMCM added a run in the eighth as well when senior infielder
Jay Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond) scored on an
error by NEC.
St. Mary's freshman righty Barrett Enix
(Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) retired the side in order
in the ninth with two fly outs to the outfield and one strikeout
looking, keeping the Seahawks within two. Enix (0-2) suffered
the loss after pitching 3.1 innings of relief, giving up two earned
runs on three hits.
But Donovan Funk pitched a strong ninth as well
with a ground out, a walk, a pop up and a strikeout looking.
Funk (1-0) earned the victory with two solid innings as he allowed
only one run on one hit with a pair of walks.
Mike Caravella led the Pilgrims at the plate
with a 4-for-5 effort with two runs and an RBI. Four other
NEC players connected on two hits each.
Sophomore DH Donald Redmiles (Davidsonville,
Md./DeMatha) was the Seahawk hitting leader, going 4-of-5 with two
RBI. Corton, senior infielder Mike Lance
(Eldersburg, Md./Centennial) and Cole each had two hits.
