St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland baseball team won its second consecutive contest as the
Seahawks notched a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Polytechnic
University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Hawk's
Nest to improve to 9-10 on the season.
Freshman pinch runner Jeff Malcom (Salisbury,
Md./Parkside) tallied the game-tying run on a wild pitch by
Jon Paul Antara (Douglaston, N.Y.) after advancing
to third when junior catcher J.P. Debrowski
(Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) walked. Malcom pinch ran for senior
DH Mike Broccolino (Millersville, Md./Old Mill)
who doubled to right field. Freshman infielder Matt
Streich (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) recorded the
go-ahead run on fellow classmate Mark Dattilio's
(Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) sacrifice fly to
centerfield. Streich reached on a walk,
advanced to second on Debrowski's walk and made it
to third on Antara's wild pitch.
Freshman right-hander Matt Becraft
(Clarksville, Md./River Hill) picked up his first win in five
appearances for a 1-0 mark thus far. Becraft
pitched eight strong innings with two strikeouts, one walk and one
earned run on five hits. Senior closer Caleb
Simms (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) registered his second save
of the season with a hitless and scoreless ninth inning as
Simms retired the side in order with two ground
outs and a strikeout.
Broccolino hit two doubles in the contest, while sophomore
outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La
Plata) and junior infielder Jason Turen
(Clarksville, Md./River Hill) also connected on a pair of hits to
pace the Seahawks. Killebrew did pick up a RBI double in the
fourth.
The Fighting Blue Jays (2-5) notched an early 1-0 lead with a
run in the first as John Kakleas (Staten Island,
N.Y.) came home on Michael Ritzzo's (Weston,
Conn.) ground out to second. Kakleas led off
the inning with a single through the left side, advanced to second
on a sac bunt by Bryan Benisvy (Atlantic Beach,
N.Y.), and made it to third on a balk by Becraft.
St. Mary's equalized the contest at 1-1 in the third when
freshman infielder Matt Baden (Sunderland,
Md./Huntingtown) crossed home plate on Streich's
single through the left side. Baden reached
first after being hit by Antara, advanced to
second on senior infielder Jay Benedetti's
(Laurel, Md./Hammond) walk, and arrived at third on a fly out to
center by Broccolino.
The Seahawks went up 2-1 in the next inning when
Killebrew doubled through the right side to drive
in Turen who reached on a bunt single.
Polytechnic regained the lead in the sixth with a pair of
runs. Kakleas scored his second run of the
day on a wild pitch by Becraft after
Kakleas singled to left field and reached third on
an error by Streich.
Benisvy was batted in by M.
Ritzzo's ground out to shortstop.
Benisvy reached on Streich's
error and went to second on that same play and then advanced to
third on the wild pitch.
Kakleas had two hits and two runs scored on the day to lead
Polytechnic in the loss.
