St. Mary's City, Md. - The second time around,
the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team notched a five-run
victory over the visiting Fighting Blue Jays of Polytechnic
University as the Seahawks won the non-conference game, 8-3,
Wednesday afternoon.
Senior lefty Matthew Swissman (Rockville,
Md./T.S. Wootton) pitched six strong innings to record his first
win of the season. Swissman (1-0) struck out four, scattered
three hits and had no earned runs. Senior closer
Caleb Simms (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) registered
his third save of the season and second straight with 1.1 innings
with no hits and no runs as Simms pitched the last
out in the eighth with runners on first and second and the tying
run at bat. He then retired the side in order with a ground
out and two strikeouts.
SMCM led 2-0 after three innings as freshman infielder
Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) scored
once in the first and again in the third on sacrifice flies by
senior catcher Mike Broccolino (Millersville,
Md./Old Mill) each time.
The Seahawks (10-10) went up 4-0 in the fourth as senior
outfielder Josh Feldman (Cabin John, Md./Walt
Whitman) came home on a sac fly by junior infielder Jason
Turen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and sophomore
outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La
Plata) crossed home plate on freshman outfielder Bobby
Corton's (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) double to right
center.
St. Mary's added another in the fifth as
Broccolino scored on a double by junior infielder
Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus).
Polytechnic (2-6) avoided the shutout in the sixth as freshman
outfielder Bryan Benisvy (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.)
scored on an error by Broccolino. The
Seahawks went back to a five-run cushion in the sixth when
Killebrew notched his second run of the day on a
double by Baden.
The Blue Jays cut the lead to 6-3 as Benisvy
and sophomore Michael Shiwdin (Richmond Hill,
N.Y.) came home on a two-run single by sophomore Carlos
Ruiz (Meriden, Conn.).
The 8-3 win was secured in the eighth when freshman pinch runner
Jeff Malcom (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) crossed home
plate on a single to right field by
Broccolino. Broccolino himself scored as
Beaudoin earned a base on balls with bases
loaded.
Killebrew had three hits and two runs, while Broccolino and
Beaudoin finished 2-for-3 and Baden went 2-for-2. Broccolino
tallied three RBI and one run.
Junior righty Chris Guillou (Astoria, N.Y.)
suffered the loss with 7.0 innings pitched. Guillou gave up
six runs on 11 hits and walked three. Five different Blue
Jays had a hit.
