Seahawks Fall in CAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Sixth-seeded University of Mary Washington knocked off No. 3 seed St. Mary's College of Maryland, 7-4, in one of four Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinal contests Monday afternoon.

Mary Washington (7-6) advances to Thursday's CAC Semifinal at second-seeded Villa Julie College, who was a 19-3 winner over seventh-seeded Marymount (Va.) University.  The Eagles avenged a 14-4 loss at St. Mary's back on March 26 with today's victory.

St. Mary's (7-7) is eliminated from the 2008 CAC Tournament but still have one game left on its schedule as the Seahawks will take on No. 8 Cabrini College in non-conference action on April 26 in Pennsylvania.  Today's loss marks the first time that SMCM has not advanced to the semifinals in seven years under head coach Jayme Block.

UMW's freshman goalie Ryan Kleman (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) proved to be the difference in the game as Kleman made 20 saves on 37 shots taken by St. Mary's and held the Seahawks scoreless in the first half.

Both teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first 15 minutes but the Eagles broke the stalemate in the second quarter as junior midfielder Charlie White (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) scored an unassisted goal at 10:04.  That would be all she wrote in the first half as Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Mary Washington started the third frame with three straight before senior attackman Pat Oliphant (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) found the back of the net off a feed from sophomore Josh Hostetler (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) at 6:05 to pull SMCM within 4-1.  The Eagles regained a four-goal lead with an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J./Shawnee) at 5:07.

The Seahawks outscored Mary Washington, 3-2, in the final period but the late rally came up short.

St. Mary's was a perfect 9-of-9 in face-offs for the game's first three periods before losing two in the fourth to finish 13-of-15.  Junior face-off specialist Marc DiPasquale (Joppa, Md./Boys' Latin) won 11-of-13, while sophomore Justin Glover (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial).

Both Meyer and junior middie Brent Fisk (Falls Church, Va./Landon) had two goals apiece to lead the Eagles, while senior Scott Fletcher (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) had a goal and an assist.

Oliphant finished the day with two goals and an assist, while junior long-stick middie Brian Wallace (Landenburg, Pa./Avon) caused a game-high four caused turnovers and had five loose ball pick-ups.

Freshmen goalies JJ Strombosky (Westford, Mass./Rivers) and Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) split time between the pipes and each made four save in their respective half.
