Radnor, Pa. - A 7-2 run in the
second quarter by No. 7 Cabrini College helped the Cavaliers post a
20-10 victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's
lacrosse team Saturday afternoon in the Seahawks' final contest of
the 2008 campaign.
Cabrini (14-2) struck first just 25 seconds into the game as
Scott Reimer found the back of the net.
Senior attackman Pat Oliphant (Chatham,
N.J./Chatham) knotted the game at 1-1 just 14 seconds later before
the Cavaliers notched a two-goal advantage at 12:08 with
back-to-back unassisted goals. Freshman attackman
Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) and
junior Brian Wallace (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove)
equalized the contest at three before Cabrini answered with two
straight to end the first quarter with a 5-3 lead.
St. Mary's (7-8) started the second period with a 2-1 run to
pull within 6-5 at 11:49 as senior midfielder Steve
Hutwelker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and
sophomore attackman Josh Hostetler (Clarksville,
Md./River Hill) each scored one. However, the Cavaliers used
a 6-0 run to pull away from the Seahawks as Paul
Skulski netted two in the run, giving his team a 12-5
halftime lead.
Reimer scored twice in the third frame as Cabrini outscored the
Seahawks, 3-2. The Cavaliers sealed the win with a 5-3
stretch in the final quarter.
Casey Grugan paced Cabrini with a game-high
four goals while Matt McKinney added three goals
and an assist. Reimer finished with a hat trick while
Rich Romanelli, Skulski and Matt
Conway each tallied two goals and an assist.
Kevin Fahey helped the Cavaliers win 17-of-32
face-offs as Fahey captured 8-of-13 face-offs. Bobby
Chambers and Kevin Chenoweth split equal
time in goal as both allowed five goals and recorded seven stops.
Cabrini outshot St. Mary's 46-31, while winning 44 of 74 ground
balls.
Oliphant and Rosson each netted two goals apiece for the
Seahawks, while freshman midfielder Colin Gload
(Hereford, Md./Hereford) scooped up a team-high five loose balls.
Between the pipes, freshman JJ Strombosky
(Westford, Mass./Rivers) received the start and gave up 12 goals
and made 10 saves in the first half, while freshman Pat
Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) notched seven stops with
eight goals against in the second half.
