Frederick, Md.
- Freshman guard Bethany Townsend
(Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) knocked down a pair of free throws to
break a 56-56 tie and seal a two-point win with seven seconds left
in regulation as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
basketball team notched a 58-56 Capital Athletic Conference triumph
over host Hood College Saturday afternoon.
Hood (3-10, 1-3 CAC) squandered the game's waning seconds as the
Blazers were unable to release a shot before the buzzer went off.
The Seahawks (3-8) evened their conference mark at 2-2 as sophomore
forward Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall)
registered her second consecutive double-double with career-highs
of 23 points on 10-of-22 shooting and 13 rebounds. Sophomore
guard Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) missed
her career-high by a point as Roberts tallied 18
points and grabbed four boards.
The first half was dominated by St. Mary's as the Seahawks
jumped out to a 19-7 lead at 11:17, holding the Blazers scoreless
for nearly six minutes as Hood's last field goal came on a
three-point shot by senior guard Sara Wastler
(Rocky Ridge, Md./Catoctin) at 16:25. Junior guard
Brianna Raithel (Hagerstown, Md./Tuscarora) ended
the scoreless drought with her jumper at 11:06.
Roberts gave the Seahawks their biggest lead of
13 (24-11) with a lay-up at 8:42 and St. Mary's went into the
locker room with a 36-29 advantage. Hurte
led all players at the half with 14 points, while
Roberts had a dozen. Senior forward
Jessica Head (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) paced Hood
with seven points, while the conference's leading scorer, junior
forward Jen Willison (Hancock, Md./Hancock), had
six and seven caroms.
Hood made it interesting in the second stanza as the Blazers
knotted the game twice, including the 56-56 tie at 00:19 following
a lay-up by senior guard Jessica Parrish
(Baltimore, Md./Catonsville CC). A 13-4 run put Hood up 54-50
with 5:18 to go in the game but back-to-back jumpers by
Hurte and a pair of free throws by senior forward
Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) helped St.
Mary's reclaim a 56-54 margin at 1:15.
Senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) pulled down a dozen rebounds, while
Murphy and junior center Alex
Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) each grabbed nine
boards to aide the Seahawks.
Three Blazers finished in twin figures as
Willison led the way with a double-double on 14
points and 12 rebounds, while Parrish added 13
points and seven boards and Wastler had 11 points
and seven caroms.
St. Mary's returns to action next Wednesday, January 14 as the
Seahawks travel to Pennsylvania to face York (Pa.) College in
league action at 6:00. The women's game is the first of a CAC
doubleheader as men's hoops will square off against YCP at 8:00.
