St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's basketball team halted its losing skid at two
with a 67-56 victory over Gallaudet University Monday afternoon in
Capital Athletic Conference action as sophomore center
Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) registered
a double-double on a career-high 19 boards and 14 points.
The Seahawks rolled out to a 35-27 halftime lead behind 12
first-half points from senior forward Allie Scott
(Laurel, Md./Atholton). St. Mary's kicked off the first 20
minutes with a 10-2 run and never looked back, bolstering their
advantage to 25-13 with 6:26 left in the half.
Junior Brittany Payne (Pine Hill, N.J./New
Jersey School) provided five consecutive points, including a
three-pointer with three seconds remaining in the half, to pull the
Bison within eight at the half. Payne and
sophomore Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind./Indiana
School) each had eight points to pace Gallaudet at intermission.
The Bison started the second stanza on a 13-6 tear to close the
gap to 41-40 with 13:00 left following a jumper by
Hayes. St. Mary's used a 7-2 spurt to
distance itself from the herd and maintain its hold on the
game. However, Gallaudet continued to battle and came within
five at 2:10 but the Seahawks went 8-of-13 from the free throw line
to seal the win.
It has been two months since the Seahawks have made more than
40% of their shots as the team finished shooting 44.1% from the
floor for the game. Back on November 21, 2008, St. Mary's
shot 46% against Washington (Md.) College.
Behind Hurte's 19 caroms, the Seahawks
dominated the glass, out-rebounding Gallaudet, 51-32.
Joining Hurte in double figures was
Scott and senior forward Kiely
Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel).
Scott added seven second-half points to finish
with 20 and grabbed seven boards, while Murphy
chipped in 13 and dished out a game- and career-best seven assists.
Hayes paced all players with 22 points and
hauled in 13 rebounds, while contributing three assists, three
steals and two blocks. Payne was also in
twin digits with a dozen and recorded seven boards, four assists
and four steals as well.
St. Mary's returns to action this Wednesday, January 21 when the
Seahawks welcome Christendom College to the ARC Arena for a
non-conference contest at 8:00.
