Arlington, Va. - The Seahawks'
second-half rally fell short as the St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's basketball team suffered a 78-66 setback to No. 25
Marymount (Va.) University Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic
Conference action.
Marymount (15-4, 8-2 CAC) appeared to have a solid 15-point lead
at the start of the second half but the Seahawks opened up the
stanza with a 22-10 run to put the Saints on their heels and cut
the deficit to three (57-54) at 9:25. St. Mary's kept the
pressure on but never got any closer as Marymount used a 6-0 spurt
behind four points from junior forward Kathleen
Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman).
The Saints' junior guard Terrell White
(Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) led all players with 26 points as
White went 12-of-17 from the free throw line and
dished out a game-high five assists. Senior guard
Kathryn Wilson (Richmond, Va./Saint Gertrude) was
the only other Saint to register double digits as
Wilson tallied 15 points.
After Marymount opened up the contest with a 7-0 run, the
Seahawks (6-12, 4-6 CAC) responded with a 9-0 run of their own to
boast their only lead of the game, 9-7, at 15:37. An 11-0
Saint run following an 18-18 tie at 11:52 gave Marymount the
breathing room it needed to post a 47-32 halftime advantage.
White notched 12 first-half points, while
senior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good
Counsel) led the Seahawks with 11 points.
St. Mary's shot better from the floor than the Saints at a 44.3%
to 35.5% clip as three Seahawks finished in twin figures with
Murphy leading the way as she matched her
season-best with 15 points. Senior forward Allie
Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and sophomore center
Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) each
contributed 14 points.
Marymount dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Seahawks,
51-38, as Brown hauled in a game-best 13 rebounds
and freshman forward Julie Tomesheski (Howells,
N.Y./Minisink Valley) grabbed 10.
Murphy led her squad with nine boards, while
Scott and sophomore guard Jamie
Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) each pulled down seven.
St. Mary's will return to action this coming Monday, February 2
when the Seahawks make the long trek to Salisbury, Maryland to
battle the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in a league action at
6:00. In their first meeting of the season, Salisbury pulled
out its first win of the season with a 67-60 victory on January 7
despite a career-high 19 points from Roberts.
