St. Mary's City, Md. - Twenty points from
freshman guard Katharine Curran (Malvern,
Pa./Great Valley) helped the Salisbury University women's
basketball team pick up their first win of the season as the Sea
Gulls snapped an 11-game losing skid with a 67-60 victory over St.
Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday night in Capital Athletic
Conference action.
Curran doled out 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting
as she was 5-for-9 from downtown. Freshman guard
Meghan Dunn (Olney, Md./Sherwood) added 14 points
and four rebounds off the bench, while junior forward Kylie
Hall (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) contributed a
double-double on 12 boards and 11 points.
Salisbury (1-11, 1-2 CAC) opened up the scoring with a lay-up
from junior forward Janay Johnson (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) at 19:07 and then sophomore forward Tiara
Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) responded for the
Seahawks (2-8, 1-2 CAC) with a jumper seconds later. The 2-2
tie would hold for the next four minutes as both squads combined
for 0-of-9 from the field and committed five turnovers.
SU's sophomore guard Chante McKinney
(Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) finally broke the 2-2 draw,
sparking a 15-8 run to put the Sea Gulls ahead 17-10 with 8:20 left
in the game. The run was capped by a lay-up from
Dunn who then scored the remaining six of her
eight first-half points in the final 5:40 to give her team a 31-26
lead at halftime.
Hurte and sophomore guard Jamie
Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) each had eight points in
the first 20 minutes to pace St. Mary's at intermission.
Salisbury edged the Seahawks in rebounding, 25-19, in the first
half and a near repeat performance in the second stanza gave them a
54-36 margin for the game.
SMCM was set to make a comeback, opening up the final half of
play with a 16-6 run to establish their largest lead of the game
(42-37) at 11:04 on senior forward Allie Scott's
(Laurel, Md./Atholton) lay-up.
Roberts connected on a pair of free throws and
junior center Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) notched a lay-up for a 56-55 Seahawk lead at 3:55 but unable
to hold on, Salisbury closed out the game on a 12-4 run behind
eight points from Curran.
Johnson finished with a game-high 13 caroms,
seven points, and two blocks, while McKinney had
near double-double on 10 rebounds and a game-high nine assists.
Roberts tallied a career-high 19 points with
6-of-15 shooting from the floor and 7-of-13 from the charity
stripe, while Hurte had a double-double on
season-highs of 14 points and 11 caroms.
Wenger also matched her career-best from Monday
night with 11 boards. Scott chipped in a
dozen points.
St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday, January 10 as the
Seahawks travel to Frederick, Md. to face Hood College in another
CAC tilt at 2:00. The women's game is the first of a CAC
doubleheader as men's hoops will also take on Hood on Saturday at
4:00.
