St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior forward Katie
Dawkins (Easton, Md./Easton) and freshman Sandee
Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) each tallied a goal and an
assist in leading York (Pa.) College to a key 4-2 Capital Athletic
Conference field hockey win over St. Mary's College of Maryland,
securing a home playoff game for the Spartans.
With the win, York (12-6, 4-2 CAC) not only secures the third
seed in the upcoming CAC playoffs, which begin on Sunday, November
1, but the Spartans also snapped their four-game losing skid
against St. Mary's. YCP's last win against the Seahawks was a
3-2 overtime road win on Halloween 2004.
Today's loss drops St. Mary's (8-6, 2-4 CAC) to fifth in the
league standings and means the Seahawks will travel to Wesley
College next Sunday for first round action.
Reich gave the visitors an early lead as she found the
back of the cage just five minutes into the contest, deflecting
Dawkins' pass from outside the circle into the
left corner. Junior forward Allison Roush
(Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) increased her team's lead to two
at 30:02 as she played a loose ball into the left corner. The
score remained 2-0 as the horn sounded to signal the end of the
first half.
Freshman forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg) cut the Seahawk deficit in half in the second half as
Parker put back a blocked shot for her
team-leading 12th goal of the season. However, York responded
two minutes later as Dawkins tucked one in inside
the right post for her team-best 15th goal off a through pass from
Reich.
Junior Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown,
Pa./Delone Catholic) finished out the scoring for the Spartans at
61:16 as Lawrence redirected a rebound to the back
of the cage.
Freshman midfielder Brooke Masimore (Hampstead,
Md./North Carroll) made it a two-goal game at 64:45 as
Masimore took a feed from Parker
who had dribbled in before passing the ball off.
The reigning CAC Player of the Week, senior Claire
Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior), had a solid
effort for YCP, turning away nine of the Seahawks' 15 shots.
The Spartans posted a 10-8 penalty corner margin and took 13 shots.
Junior Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) picked
up four saves in her fourth loss of the year.
Prior to the game, St. Mary's recognized its three seniors:
Amanda Bramble (Easton, Md./Easton), Julia
Puzak (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), and Christy
Scaljon (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco). This trio of
seniors has helped lead the Seahawks to a four-year mark of 40-25,
including a 16-8 conference record, as well as back-to-back trips
to the CAC championship game (2007 and 2008).
St. Mary's will return to action next Tuesday, October 27 as the
Seahawks travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on Eastern Mennonite
University in SMCM's regular-season finale at 4:00 pm.
