St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior guard
Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton)
poured in a game- and season-high 27 points, including 17 in the
first half, in leading St. Mary's College of Maryland to its first
win of the season as the Seahawks posted a 73-67 non-conference
victory over Shenandoah University Sunday afternoon.
Saint-Aubin shot 13-of-22 from the floor while
picking up a season-best seven steals as she led a trio of Seahawks
in double-digit scoring. Freshman guard Pui
Sham (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) matched her
season-high of 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting while junior guard
Megan Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore) tallied a
season-best of 15 points. Senior center Alex
Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) led the Seahawks on the
glass with a game-high 13 rebounds while adding four points and
four assists.
St. Mary's (1-4) never trailed in the game as the Seahawks
opened up with a 4-0 run and never looked back. After
Shenandoah's junior Sierra Edwards (Leesburg,
Va./Herndon) knotted the game at 14-all with a lay-up at 12:52, the
home team went on a 23-10 run to boast its biggest lead of 13
at 3:34 as Sham capped the run with a
three-pointer.
However, the Hornets (2-2) chipped away at the 13-point deficit
with strong defense, causing St. Mary's to commit two turnovers and
miss three field goals in the final three minutes of the first
half. Shenandoah headed into the locker room down only 40-36.
The visitors finished with four players in double figures as
senior forward Alexis Hargbol (Manassas,
Va./Osbourn) paced the Hornets with 16 points and nine
boards. Edwards and senior guard
Katherine Flint (Natural Bridge, Va./Rockbridge
County) each posted 14 points while Flint dished
out eight assists and grabbed six boards.
Edwards also added eight caroms as a
reserve. Sophomore guard Mandy Johnston
(Herndon, Va./Oakton) rounded out the Hornet scorers with a dozen
as well as five boards.
Hargbol's lay-up at 16:44 knotted the contest
(44-44) for the fifth and final time as the Seahawks rebuilt a
13-point lead in a near 11-minute span as once again,
Sham capped the run with a long-range shot.
Shenandoah, who finished 10-of-13 from the charity stripe for the
game, closed the gap to four (71-67) yet again at 2:11 as
Hargbol was 4-of-4 on free throws and
Johnston knocked down a trey but
Sham sealed the win with a pair of free throws
with 27 seconds left on the clock. Back-to-back three-point
attempts by Johnston and Flint
were off the mark and junior forward Jamie Roberts
(Rockville, Md./The Barrie School) hauled in the defensive board
from Flint's miss to preserve the Seahawk win.
As a team, St. Mary's shot 47.7% from the floor, including 52.9%
in the first half, while defensively, the Seahawks forced 20
turnovers by the Shenandoah squad, who shot 42.2% from the floor.
St. Mary's will begin Capital Athletic Conference play this
Wednesday, December 2 as the Seahawks travel to Arlington, Virginia
to take on No. 20 Marymount University. Tip-off is set for
6:00 pm.
