Box Score

Arlington, Va. - Strong shooting in the second half propelled No. 12 St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 63-51 victory over Marymount (Va.) University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for the Seahawks Wednesday night.

After Marymount (3-3, 1-1 CAC) edged the Seahawks, 27-24, in the first half, St. Mary's opened up the second half with a 6-2 run to reclaim the lead for good as junior guard Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) netted four points.  The visitors stretched their lead to a double-digit margin for the final 7:41 of the contest as the Seahawks connected on 62.5% of their shots in the second half.

Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) led all players with 19 points while Franz was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards (matched season-best) along with dishing out five assists.  Junior forward Johann Jones (Severn, Md./Meade Senior) equaled his career-high of 10 points off the bench.

There were eight lead changes and four tied scores in the first half as neither team led by more than four points until St. Mary's (4-1, 1-0 CAC) broke a 10-10 draw with a 10-3 run to boast a 20-13 advantage at 4:57 as sophomore forward Brian Grashof (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) capped the run with a layup.

The Saints' sophomore guard Tarek Ammoury (McLean, Va./McLean) tallied five straight points to return the lead to his squad with 2:53 left in the first half.  Ammoury hauled in a defensive board that led to his jumper and then connected on a three-pointer off a Seahawk turnover.  Marymount held on for the 27-24 halftime lead as senior guard Ronnie Barbour (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglas) finished off a jumper at the buzzer.

Ammoury finished the game with a double-double on game-highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds while junior Sam Sentz (Gaithersburg, Md./Bullis) added 11 points.

The Seahawks will continue with league action this Saturday, December 5 as St. Mary's entertains Stevenson University in the ARC Arena.  Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm.
