Arlington, Va. - Strong shooting in the second
half propelled No. 12 St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 63-51
victory over Marymount (Va.) University in the Capital Athletic
Conference opener for the Seahawks Wednesday night.
After Marymount (3-3, 1-1 CAC) edged the Seahawks, 27-24, in the
first half, St. Mary's opened up the second half with a 6-2 run to
reclaim the lead for good as junior guard Alex
Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) netted four
points. The visitors stretched their lead to a double-digit
margin for the final 7:41 of the contest as the Seahawks connected
on 62.5% of their shots in the second half.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) led all players with 19 points while
Franz was one rebound shy of a double-double with
13 points and nine boards (matched season-best) along with dishing
out five assists. Junior forward Johann
Jones (Severn, Md./Meade Senior) equaled his career-high
of 10 points off the bench.
There were eight lead changes and four tied scores in the first
half as neither team led by more than four points until St. Mary's
(4-1, 1-0 CAC) broke a 10-10 draw with a 10-3 run to boast a 20-13
advantage at 4:57 as sophomore forward Brian
Grashof (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) capped the run
with a layup.
The Saints' sophomore guard Tarek Ammoury
(McLean, Va./McLean) tallied five straight points to return the
lead to his squad with 2:53 left in the first half.
Ammoury hauled in a defensive board that led to
his jumper and then connected on a three-pointer off a Seahawk
turnover. Marymount held on for the 27-24 halftime lead as
senior guard Ronnie Barbour (Upper Marlboro,
Md./Frederick Douglas) finished off a jumper at the buzzer.
Ammoury finished the game with a double-double
on game-highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds while junior Sam
Sentz (Gaithersburg, Md./Bullis) added 11 points.
The Seahawks will continue with league action this Saturday,
December 5 as St. Mary's entertains Stevenson University in the ARC
Arena. Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm.
