St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman guard
Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) poured
in a game- and season-high 22 points behind six three-pointers in
leading St. Mary's College of Maryland to its first Capital
Athletic Conference women's basketball victory. The Seahawks
(2-5, 1-1 CAC) posted a 64-53 win over Stevenson University
Saturday afternoon.
Sham finished 6-of-14 from downtown as St.
Mary's shot 38.9% (7-of-18) from downtown. Senior guard
Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton)
registered her fifth double-double of the season on 14 points and
game-high 10 rebounds while junior guard Jamie
Roberts (Rockville, Md./The Barrie School) added 10 points
and career-best four steals off the bench.
Stevenson (1-6, 0-2 CAC) took an early lead in the contest
behind a pair of long-range shots from junior guard
JaQuelia Conley (Columbia, Md./Montrose
Christian). Sham came through with her
second three-pointer of the game at 11:26 to knot the game at
14-all to spark an 11-2 run, giving the Seahawks a solid lead for
the remainder of the contest as freshman guard Lucy
Kuhna (St. Inigoes, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) capped the run
with her first collegiate three-pointer.
St. Mary's headed into the locker room with a 31-25 advantage as
Sham led all players with nine first-half
points. The home squad shot 41.9% from the floor, including
4-of-9 from downtown.
The Seahawks continued working in the second half and stretched
their lead to 49-38 at 11:42 on a Saint-Aubin
steal and layup. Stevenson utilized a 9-3 run to cut the
deficit to five at 5:48 following a layup by sophomore guard
Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St.
Elizabeth). Neither team scored in a near three and a half
minute span before Saint-Aubin broke the field
goal drought with a layup at 1:55. St. Mary's sealed the win
with a 7-of-11 effort down the stretch.
Conley was the only Mustang to finish in double
digits with 15 points while junior forward Kristen
Steiner (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) added nine points and
eight rebounds. Craig dished out a game-high
seven assists along with six points and five boards.
St. Mary's capitalized on the Mustangs' 27 turnovers as the
Seahawks netted 31 points off those turnovers.
The Seahawks will return to the court next Wednesday, December 9
when St. Mary's hosts conference rival, Salisbury University.
Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
