St. Mary's City, Md. - For the second time in
two weeks, No. 14 St. Mary's College of Maryland has posted a
victory over Salisbury University as the Seahawks notched a 72-60
Capital Athletic Conference men's basketball win Wednesday night in
front of a crowd of 500.
Their first encounter took place on November 21 when the two met
in the semifinals of the Pride of Maryland Tournament and St.
Mary's came away with a 78-76 victory.
The reigning CAC Player of the Week, senior guard
Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) paced the
Seahawks (6-1, 3-0 CAC) in the win with a game-high 17 points as
Griffin was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity
stripe. Junior guard Alex Franz
(Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) added season-highs of 16 points
and six steals along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Junior center Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt
Whitman) hauled in a team-high nine caroms and chipped in six
points.
Salisbury (3-4, 0-2 CAC) came out with guns a-blazing as the Sea
Gulls jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the game's first three minutes
as senior Greg Palmer (Salisbury, Md./Salisbury
Christian) netted six of those points.
Freshman guard Devin Spencer (Baltimore,
Md./Towson Catholic) came off the bench to spark a 13-2 Seahawk run
with back-to-back three-pointers. Griffin
bookended the run with a three-pointer of his own to steal the lead
away from the visitors for good at 11:28. St. Mary's
stretched its lead to double digits before heading into
intermission with a 29-20 advantage as the Seahawks received 11
first-half points from their bench.
Four Sea Gulls finished in double digits as junior center
Chris McGrew (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) led
the way with 16 points and three blocks while sophomore forward
Mike Maczko (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) picked up
a double-double on 15 points and a game-high 11 boards.
Senior guard Devin Jones (Glen Burnie, Md./Old
Mill) added 15 as well along with three steals and three caroms
while Palmer finished with a dozen points.
St. Mary's aggressive perimeter defense played havoc with the
conference's leader in three-point shooting as the Sea Gulls
connected on only 2-of-12 (.167) long-range shots. Salisbury
had entered tonight's game with a league-best 42.2 three-point
field goal percentage. The Seahawks were also able to
dominate the glass with a 47-33 margin.
St. Mary's will be back on the court this Saturday, December 12
as the Seahawks travel to Pennsylvania to take on York College in
another conference tilt at 7:00 pm.
