Fredericksburg, Va. - The
25th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team
picked up its fifth victory in six games as the Eagles easily
handled St. Mary's College of Maryland, 73-42, Wednesday night in
Capital Athletic Conference action.
Mary Washington (18-4, 10-3 CAC) shot a blistering 53.6 percent
from the floor, including 60.0 percent from downtown, while the
Eagle defense limited St. Mary's to a mere 9.5 percent from the
field. UMW started with a 20-0 run before the run was capped
by a three-pointer by sophomore center Tiara Hurte
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) for the Seahawks' first points of the
game at 12:11.
The Eagles led at halftime by a 36-8 margin behind 10 points
from senior guard Katy Larson (McGaheysville,
Va./Spotswood).
Mary Washington only outscored the Seahawks, 37-34, in the
second half, but the Eagles led by as many as 39, the last time
coming at 4:18 (67-28).
The Eagles had four players finish in double figures with
freshmen guards Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va./James
Madison) and Ashley Warhurst (Clifton,
Va./Centreville) leading the way with 13 points each.
Wimmer was 5-of-11 from the floor, including
3-of-3 from behind the arc, while adding a team-best seven
caroms. Warhurst was 6-of-8 off the bench.
Larson and senior forward Ashton
Mitchell (Prince George, Va./Prince George), who notched
her 1,000th career point tonight, contributed 10 points apiece to
the Mary Washington cause.
The Seahawks (7-15, 5-9 CAC) were led by senior forward
Kiely Murphy's (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) 15 points
as she equaled her season-high with 6-of-10 shooting.
Murphy was one rebound shy of a double-double as
she grabbed nine rebounds as well. Hurte
chipped in 13 points and four boards.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, February 14,
traveling to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet University on
Valentine's Day for a conference tilt. Tip-off is scheduled
for 2:00 and will be followed by the men's game at 4:00.
