St. Mary's City, Md. - Behind the efforts of
junior centerfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata,
Md./La Plata) and sophomore right-hander Mikel
Iraola (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha), the St. Mary's
College of Maryland baseball team improved to 3-2 Sunday afternoon
as the Seahawks swept the visiting Beavers of City College of New
York (0-2) in today's non-conference doubleheader.
Four multiple-run innings helped the Seahawks secure a
dominating 12-4 victory over CCNY in the first half of the twin
bill. Junior righty Jon Gill (Owings Mills,
Md./Park) notched the win in Game One as Gill
(1-1) matched his career-high with five strikeouts, while only
walking three and scattering three runs on four hits in 5.1
innings.
Killebrew paced the Seahawk offense with a
3-for-4 effort at the plate including an infield RBI single in the
third inning, while sophomore leftfielder Mark
Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) was 2-for-4
with a double and three RBI.
CCNY notched four runs on four hits and committed four errors in
the first game. Senior centerfielder Armando
Wellington (Richmond Hill, N.Y./Richmond Hill) led the
Beavers at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort as
Wellington notched an RBI triple and scored a run.
Freshman starter Joel Jimenez (New York,
N.Y./George Washington) suffered the loss as
Jimenez (0-1) gave four runs on eight hits with
three walks in 4.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Iraola threw a perfect game
through five innings before sophomore designated hitter
Colin Desmarais (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) picked
up a lead-off single in the sixth. Iraola
pitched the complete, one-hitter as he fanned a season-best seven
batters with no walks in leading St. Mary's to a 5-0 shutout of
CCNY.
St. Mary's posted an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as
junior second baseman Lyle Kralle (Great Mills,
Md./Great Mills) scored on junior leftfielder Justin
Rabon's (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) fielder's choice to
the second baseman.
The Seahawks broke open the contest in the fifth inning with
four runs, starting the inning with three straight singles to load
the bases. The home team then capitalized on a pair of Beaver
errors.
Sophomore shortstop Matt Baden (Sunderland,
Md./Huntingtown) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run
to pace the Seahawks.
Freshman starter Dave Titor (Bellrose Village,
N.Y./Floral Park) suffered the loss for the Beavers as
Titor (0-1) walked two Seahawks and scattered
seven hits with two earned runs in 5.0 innings.
The Seahawks will wrap-up the three-game series with CCNY
tomorrow afternoon as the first pitch is set for 2:00 in the Hawk's
Nest.
