St. Mary's City, Md. - Sophomore right-hander
Barrett Enix (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk
Academy) picked up his second consecutive victory as
Enix led the St. Mary's College of Maryland
baseball team to an 8-4 victory to complete the three-game sweep of
City College of New York Monday afternoon.
Enix pitched six solid innings with only three
walks and a pair of hits as the Seahawks (4-2) finished the
three-game series with CCNY outscoring the Beavers, 25-8.
St. Mary's owned a 2-0 lead after the first two innings
following an RBI double by junior centerfielder Jacen
Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) in the first inning and
a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Bobby
Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) in the second.
The Seahawks boasted a 5-0 advantage following a three-run
fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Matt
Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) initiated the scoring
with his RBI double to bring home Killebrew.
Baden crossed home plate himself as junior second
baseman Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills)
doubled to right field. The final run of the inning came on
senior third baseman Blake Beaudoin's (Damascus,
Md./Damascus) sac fly to score sophomore leftfielder Mark
Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown).
CCNY (0-3) made it interesting in the seventh as the Beavers
capitalized on a Seahawk error to put four runs on the board.
Junior designated hitter Derek Faucher (Bradford,
Pa.) led off the inning with a single then came home on sophomore
pinch hitter Colin Desmarais' (Mystic, Conn.)
two-out single. Junior pinch hitter Pavel
Cruz (New York, N.Y.) connected on a 370-foot long
three-run homer to pull the visitors within 5-4. St. Mary's
cut the Beavers' rally short in the seventh as junior
Willis Fernandez (New York, N.Y.) was caught
stealing at third for the final out of the inning.
The Seahawks established a three-run cushion in the bottom of
the seventh as Beaudoin led off with a triple and
then came home on junior first baseman Jon Gill's
(Owings Mills, Md./Park) sac fly, while senior catcher J.P.
Debrowski (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) scored on
Corton's second sac fly of the game.
The home team's eighth run came in the eighth inning behind
Debrowski's RBI single to bring home freshman
shortstop Eric Gronbeck (Owings, Md./Northern) who
lead off with a single.
Baden was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an
RBI, while Gill notched a 2-for-3 effort with a
run and an RBI.
Faucher led the Beaver offense with a 2-for-3
performance, while sophomore south paw Chris
Hopstock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound as
Hopstock (0-1) walked eight and gave up seven runs
on eight hits in 6.0 innings.
The Seahawks return to action this Saturday, February 21 when
SMCM hosts Wilkes University in a non-conference doubleheader at
the Hawk's Nest. The first pitch is set for 11:00 am.
