D.C. - Four Seahawks in double
digits propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
basketball team to a decisive 61-35 victory over host Trinity
(D.C.) University Wednesday night in a non-conference contest.
Senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) and sophomore guard Megan Seeman
(Frederick, Md./Linganore) each tallied a game-high 15 points to
pace the Seahawks (9-15) in the win. Sophomore center
Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) added a
dozen points and five boards, while sophomore guard Jamie
Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) contributed 10 points and
seven rebounds.
St. Mary's shot 32.0 percent from the field for the game after
shooting only 22.2 percent in the first half. The Tigers
(2-16) were limited to 24.0 percent from the floor, including going
0-for-12 from downtown.
A 12-3 run in the first half's final eight minutes helped the
Seahawks snap a 10-10 tie and take control of the game.
Scott led all scorers with 11 points at
intermission, while senior forward Kiely Murphy
(Olney, Md./Good Counsel) grabbed seven caroms as St. Mary's posted
a 26-20 rebounding margin in the first 20 minutes.
Murphy went on to finished with a career-high 16
rebounds.
After falling behind by 14 points, Trinity came within 29-20 at
14:28 in the second half but that is as close as the Tigers would
get the rest of the way. The Seahawk defense forced 33
Trinity turnovers for the game, while only committing 15 mistakes.
Freshman forward Lakeshia Johnson (Washington,
D.C.) was one point and one rebound shy of a double-double as
Johnson led the Tigers with nine points and nine
rebounds. Sophomore guard Danielle Pettis
(Wheaton, Md.) notched nine points off the bench, while senior
guard Sharell Kyle and sophomore forward
Stefonie Kelly (Temple Hills, Md.) each grabbed a
game-high 10 rebounds.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, February 21
when St. Mary's hosts Wesley College in its regular season finale
at 2:00 in the ARC Arena. Prior to the start of the game, the
Seahawks' two seniors will be honored.
