St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the visiting Colonels of Wilkes University Saturday afternoon.  Wilkes captured the first contest, 2-1, while the Seahawks won the second half of the twin bill, 3-0, behind a solid complete game from sophomore right-hander Mikel Iraola (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha Catholic).

Wilkes (1-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning as junior shortstop Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa.) scored on a throwing error by junior RHP Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) who was looking to pick off senior second baseman Geoff Miller (Pottsville, Pa.).  Gill held the Colonels at 1-0 as he struck out the next batter and then ended the inning with a fly out to right field.

The contest remained 1-0 until the seventh inning when the Colonels capitalized on a wild pitch by Gill to double their lead.  After a lead off ground out, Wilkes loaded the bases with three consecutive singles then sophomore right fielder Al Clocker (Swoyersville, Pa.) crossed home plate on the wild pitch.  Gill avoided more runs with back-to-back ground outs to end the inning.  Clocker paced the WU offense in the first half with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored.

The Seahawks (5-3) attempted a rally in their half of the seventh inning as sophomore shortstop Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) connected on a two-out, RBI single to score freshman Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown).  Sophomore DH Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) had a lead off walk before being subbed out by Urso.  The last out of the inning came on a fly out to center.

Junior RHP Tom Buckler (Plains, Pa.) picked up the win as Buckler (1-0) pitched 4.0 innings with four walks, two strikeouts, and one hit.  Freshman Ryan Fetterman (Endwell, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate save as Fetterman gave up the run on two hits with three walks.

Gill dropped to 1-2 on the season despite striking out five as he threw a complete game with one earned run on six hits and one walk.  Shepherd led the Seahawks at the plate with a 2-for-2 showing and a run scored.

In the nightcap, Iraola (2-0) notched his second straight victory as he fanned a season-high seven batters with only two hits and two walks in a complete, 7.0 inning game.  Senior south paw Justin Huff (Montrose, Pa.) suffered the loss for Wilkes as two runs scored during Huff's (0-1) four innings.

St. Mary's posted a 2-0 advantage in the second inning as junior leftfielder Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) picked up a two-out RBI single to bring home junior catcher Donald Redmiles (Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) who reached base on an error by the Colonel third baseman.  Rabon then scored on an RBI single by Gill.

Junior second baseman Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) gave the Seahawks a 3-0 cushion in the sixth as Kralle's RBI single allowed Baden to score.

The Seahawks will wrap-up the three-game series with Wilkes tomorrow afternoon as the first pitch is set for noon in the Hawk's Nest.
