St. Mary's City, Md. - Seven runs in two
innings propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team
to a come-from-behind 8-3 victory over Wilkes University in
non-conference action Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks (6-3)
wrapped up their three-game series with Wilkes with a 2-1 mark.
Sophomore RHP Adam Shenk (Baltimore,
Md./Western Tech) earned his first collegiate win as
Shenk (1-0) pitched 4.1 solid innings of relief
with a career-best five strikeouts and just two hits.
Three runs in the fourth inning gave Wilkes (1-2) an early 3-0
lead. Senior DH Andrew Garofoli (Altoona,
Pa.) led off with a single followed by junior outfielder
John Florance (Binghamton, N.Y.) being hit by a
pitch. Junior catcher Randy Dengler
(Ashland, Pa.) then connected on a two-run double to score
Garofoli and Florance before
advancing to third on the throw home.
Dengler scored on freshman infielder Matt
Ruch's (Dallas, Pa.) ground out.
Shenk relieved sophomore starter
Barrett Enix (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk
Academy) in the fourth with two outs on the board and senior
outfielder Eric Wetzel (New Berlin, N.J.) on
first. Wetzel stole second before
Shenk tallied his first strikeout of the game as
he caught junior infielder Mike McAndrew (Avoca,
Pa.) looking to end the inning.
St. Mary's cut its deficit to 3-1 in the fifth inning as
sophomore infielder Matt Baden's (Sunderland,
Md./Huntingtown) bases loaded walk allowed sophomore DH
Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) to
cross home plate.
The Seahawks claimed a 4-3 advantage in the seventh inning as
junior outfielder Jacen Killebrew's (La Plata,
Md./La Plata) infield single scored junior infielder Jon
Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) who led off the inning with
a walk. Baden followed that with a two-run
triple to bring home Shepherd (reached base with a
walk) and Killebrew.
Senior infielder Blake Beaudoin (Damascus,
Md./Damascus) led off the eighth inning with a triple, then came
home on senior catcher J.P. Debrowski's
(Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) double, sparking St. Mary's four-run
inning. Sophomore outfielder Bobby Corton's
(Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) RBI single allowed
Debrowski to score, while Gill
(reached base with a walk) advanced to third on the single and then
scored on the throw to home. With Wilkes concerned with
Debrowski and Gill coming home,
Corton stretched his single all the way to third
and then Corton crossed home plate on an error by
the pitcher who tried to get him out as his arrived at third.
Corton went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run,
while Debrowski was 2-for-4, including a double,
with an RBI and a run to lead the Seahawk offense.
Junior RHP Shawn Ward (Moosic, Pa.) suffered
the loss as Ward (0-1) gave up five runs on five
hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Garofoli was
the only Colonel to have a multiple-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort.
St. Mary's returns to action on Wed., February 25 as the
Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference action with the
University of Mary Washington. First pitch is slated for 2:30
in the Hawk's Nest.
