St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's basketball team had four players score in
double figures in an impressive 84-31 Capital Athletic Conference
(CAC) victory over Hood College Wednesday evening.
The Seahawks (7-13, 5-7 CAC) opened the contest with an 11-0 run
in the opening 3:14 and never looked back. Senior forward
Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) sparked the
opening run with five of the first seven points for the home team.
Hood (4-17, 2-10 CAC) ended the run with a pair of free throws
from sophomore guard Allyson Lethbridge (Union
Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) at the 15:42 mark for their first
points of the contest.
St. Mary's used a 14-2 advantage in the paint to post a 38-12
halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same as the Seahawks continued
to pound the ball inside against a much smaller Hood squad.
St. Mary's ended the contest with a 40-4 advantage in the
paint, while also recording a 57-25 advantage on the glass in the
contest.
Sophomore center Tiara Hurte (Baltimore,
Md./Perry Hall) paced the Seahawks with a game-high 22 points on
11-of-16 shooting from the field. Junior center Alex
Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) posted a double-double
on the evening with career-highs in both points (18) and rebounds
(12). Senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) also posted a double-double with 12 points and 11
rebounds, while Murphy finished the contest with
11 points and tied her career-high with a game-high seven assists.
Lethbridge led all Hood scorers with 16 points
in the contest, while junior guard Brianna Raithel
(Hagerstown, Md./Tuscarora) contributed six points and a team-high
eight boards.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday with a home
conference contest against York College of Pennsylvania. The
game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 and is part of the Pink
ZoneTM initiative held in conjunction with the Women's
Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The contest has been
identified to help raise awareness and donations to fight breast
cancer. All proceeds received through ticket sales and
donations will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
Informational pamphlets and brochures will also be given out
at the arena entrance.
