St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior attackman
Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) tallied a
game-high five points on four goals and an assist as
Kazimer led the third-ranked Stevenson University
men's lacrosse team to a decisive 13-4 Capital Athletic Conference
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon in
the league opener for both teams.
The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first quarter as
sophomore middie Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg,
Pa./Central Dauphin East) struck first for the Mustangs at 10:50,
while junior captain Ryan Alexander (Laurel,
Md./Pallotti) knotted the game at 8:28 with a man-up goal.
Stevenson (5-0, 1-0 CAC) rattled off three unanswered goals to
start the second period before sophomore attackman Dennis
Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) notched one for the
Seahawks. Back-to-back goals by senior middie Chris
Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) in a 1:06-minute
span gave the Mustangs a 6-2 halftime lead.
Two consecutive goals by Kazimer and one by
senior middie Nicola Bevacqua (Boonton Twp.,
N.J./Mountain Lakes) upped Stevenson's lead to 9-2 at 7:05 in the
third stanza. Freshman middie Billy Scheurer
(Telford, Pa./Souderton Area) stopped the Mustang run with his
first collegiate goal at 3:50. Kazimer
notched his fourth goal of the game with 1:47 left in the third.
The Mustangs outscored St. Mary's (1-3, 0-1 CAC) 3-1 in the
final quarter as Scheurer netted the Seahawks'
lone goal at 11:58 on an extra-man opportunity.
Senior middie Brett Yoder (Parkton,
Md./Hereford) added a goal and two assists, while senior middie
Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson) and
Baldwin each finished with two goals.
The Mustangs dominated the face-offs with a 16-of-21 effort as
sophomore Joe Valderas (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal
Gibbons) won 8-of-9, while Furshman was 7-of-11.
Scheurer ended with a pair of goals, while
Rosson had a goal and two assists to pace the
Seahawk offense.
Stevenson rattled off 50 shots to St. Mary's 24, while the
Mustangs owned a 37-26 advantage in ground balls as junior middie
Tyler Maguire (Montauk, N.Y./Whittier) and
sophomore defenseman Evan Douglass (Exeter,
N.H./Exeter) each scooped up a game-high five.
The Mustangs' junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville,
Md./Dulaney) picked up 11 saves in 55 minutes, while sophomore
Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had 11 stops
in three quarters of play in the loss.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, March 14 when
the Seahawks host the College of Wooster in Seahawk Stadium for a
non-conference game at 1:00.
