St. Mary's City, Md. - The York (Pa.) College
men's lacrosse team held off St. Mary's College of Maryland's late
rally for a 7-5 Capital Athletic Conference victory on a wet,
overcast Saturday afternoon.
York (4-5, 2-2 CAC) notched its first-ever win over St. Mary's
in the 13th meeting between the two schools since 2000. The
Seahawks had won 12 straight until today.
St. Mary's (3-5, 1-2 CAC) struck first with two goals from
sophomores Chris Morihlatko (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) and Dennis Rosson (Severna Park,
Md./Severn) in the first 15 minutes.
It was all York in the second quarter as three different
Spartans netted unassisted goals for a 3-2 YCP halftime lead.
YCP's freshman middie Bradford Blaker (West
Chester, Pa./Henderson) connected with senior midfielder
Brian O'Neill (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) for a
man-up goal in the third period, giving the Spartans a 4-2 lead
after three quarters.
Morihlatko pulled the Seahawks within 4-3 at
10:51 left in the game with his second goal of the game before York
scored three straight as junior attackman Ryan
McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston) assisted on two.
Down by four goals with 3:37 remaining, St. Mary's notched two
goals in a 1:04-minute span to close the gap to 7-5 at 2:10.
However, the Seahawks committed four turnovers in the game's final
minutes and were unable to come any closer.
The Spartans' leading scorer, sophomore attackman Josh
Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton), scored twice today, while
McNicholas finished with his two fourth-period
assists.
York won 9-of-16 face-offs as junior middie Zach
Scherr (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) captured
8-of-13. The Spartans also posted a 34-26 edge in ground
balls as junior defenseman James Greenwood (Bel
Air, Md./Fallston) scooped up a game-high eight loose balls.
The Seahawks took 32 shots to York's 24.
Morihlatko and Rosson both
tallied two goals to pace the home team's offense, while freshman
middie Billy Scheurer (Telford, Pa./Souderton
Area) dished out two assists.
Freshman Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck)
had five saves in the loss, while sophomore Chris
Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster) notched 13 stops in
guiding the Spartans to the win.
St. Mary's returns to action next Wednesday, April 1 with a
conference match-up with Marymount (Va.) University at 8:30 pm at
Gunston Field in Arlington.
