Glen Burnie, Md. - The
Stevenson University baseball team improved to 4-0 in Capital
Athletic Conference action with a sweep of St. Mary's College of
Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Bachman Sports Complex.
The losses snapped the Seahawks' five-game win streak as St. Mary's
fell to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the CAC.
Stevenson's senior LHP Wade Keenan (Eldersburg,
Md./Liberty) pitched a two-hit complete game in the first half of
the twin bill to lead his Mustangs (7-2, 5-0 CAC) to a 1-0 victory
in the first game of the day. Keenan (2-0)
struck out six, walked two and scattered two hits as Stevenson's
first inning run proved to be enough.
The Mustangs' lone run in the first inning came on a bases
loaded sacrifice fly to right field by junior George
Papuchis (Damascus, Md./Good Counsel) to score sophomore
Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) who
reached on a fielder's choice.
Junior RHP Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park)
dropped to 2-3 on the season as Gill gave up the
lone run on five hits with one walk in his second complete game of
the season.
In the nightcap, freshman RHP D.J. Milliken
(Owings, Md./Northern) threw 1.1 innings of relief to help
Stevenson preserve a 7-5 victory and stifle the Seahawks'
rally. Milliken (1-0) gave up one run on one
hit with three walks and one strikeout. Sophomore closer
Chris Maienshien (Finksburg, Md./Westminster)
notched his first save as Maienshien recorded the
last two outs of the game.
Freshman closer Matt Siciliano (Ardmore,
Pa./Lower Merion) suffered his second loss of the season as
Siciliano allowed three runs on three hits in 2.0
innings with three walks and two strikeouts.
Stevenson jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Seahawks cut the
deficit to 3-2 in the third inning by capitalizing on a pair of
Mustang errors. Each team scored a run in the fifth as
Stevenson maintained a one-run (4-3) lead.
Then St. Mary's deadlocked the game at 4-all in the seventh to
force extra innings. Sophomore shortstop Matt
Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) scored on senior
catcher J.P. Debrowski's (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg)
two-out single to right center. Debrowski
finished the game with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two RBI
to pace the Seahawk offense.
The Mustangs exploded for three runs in the ninth on a
Tarlow double to center; a senior Ryan
Baione (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) sac fly; and a wild
pitch. St. Mary's managed a run in the ninth before
Maienshien shut them down with a pair of ground
outs.
The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow when St. Mary's
wraps up its three-game series with Stevenson at the Bachman
Complex with a single, nine-inning game at 1:00.
