Arlington, Va. - The St. Mary's College of
Maryland men's lacrosse team bounced back from Saturday's loss to
York (Pa.) College with an 11-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory
over Marymount (Va.) University behind hat tricks from sophomore
attackmen Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn)
and Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel).
Rosson finished with a game-high four points as
he added a helper as well, while freshman attackman Brendan
Oster (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) contributed two goals and an
assist.
St. Mary's (4-5, 2-2 CAC) established a 2-1 lead after the first
period following tallies by Rosson and freshman
John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex [Mass.]) to
erase Marymount's 1-0 lead.
The Saints (5-6, 1-4 CAC) outscored St. Mary's 4-2 in the second
quarter, including three straight, to post a 5-4 halftime
advantage. Sophomore middie Tom Anderson
(Arlington, Va./Yorktown) led the Saints in the period with two
goals.
Three consecutive goals by the Seahawks to start the third
stanza helped the visitors reclaim the lead for good at 2:49
(7-5). Saint senior captain Alex Curley
(Richmond, Va./Thomas Dale) closed the gap to within one with 38
seconds left in the quarter but Marymount would get no closer.
St. Mary's defense went to work in the final period as the
Seahawks held Marymount scoreless, including killing three
extra-man opportunities, while freshman Pat
Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made seven stops to finish
the evening with 17 saves in goal. Becraft
scored twice in the final 15 minutes to seal Seahawk win.
Senior captain Marc DiPasquale (Fallston,
Md./Boys' Latin) captured 14-of-19 face-offs, including winning
5-of-7 in the second period, as DiPasquale bested
Marymount's freshman Joe Rafferty (Bethesda,
Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) who finished 4-of-16.
The Seahawks took 38 shots to the home team's 33, while edging
the Saints 32-30 in ground balls.
Anderson paced the Marymount offense with two
goals, while sophomore attackman Danny Carson
(Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and senior attackman Kevin
Conklin (Parsonsburg, Md./Wicomico) each tallied a goal
and an assist. In goal, junior Joe Gagliardi
(Carney's Point, N.J./Salesianum) notched 14 stops in the loss.
St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday, April 4 with a
conference match-up in Dover, Delaware against Wesley College at
1:30 pm.
