St. Mary's City, Md. - The No. 17 St. Mary's
College of Maryland men's basketball team used 38 bench points and
a season-high 11 three-pointers to fend off a pesky University of
Mary Washington squad, 91-86, in Capital Athletic Conference action
on a foul-filled Wednesday night. With tonight's six
consecutive triumph, St. Mary's is tied for first in the league
standings with Hood College.
The Seahawks and Mary Washington combined for 53 team fouls,
including three technicals and one intentional, while three players
fouled out. The two squads joined for 65 free throw attempts
as St. Mary's was 20-of-32 from the charity stripe and the Eagles
connected on 24-of-33.
St. Mary's (12-2, 5-1 CAC) owned a 17-point lead at 16:47 before
the Eagles slowly worked to change the momentum of the game by
outscoring the home team, 33-17, in the 13 minutes to close the gap
to 82-81 with 3:33 remaining as sophomore guard Ryan
Farrar (Ashburn, Va./Centreville) capped the run with his
only three-point shot of the game.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) answered the call with seven straight points to rebuild
the Seahawks' lead to eight (89-81) at 1:41 and secure the 91-86
victory. Griffin finished the night with 21
points to pace his team.
Perfection was the theme of the night for Seahawk guards
James Davenport (Owings Mills, Md./Loyola
Blakefield) and Devin Spencer (Baltimore,
Md./Towson Catholic) as the duo combined for 30 bench points.
Davenport was 5-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-2
from downtown, to finish with a career-high 16 while
Spencer made all four of his three-point shots for
a season-best 14 points, helping their team boast a 57.9% from
three-point land as the Seahawks went 11-of-19.
Juniors Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman)
and Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons)
each contributed 11 points to the Seahawk offense while
Franz added game-highs of eight assists and five
steals.
After keeping it close in the early minutes of the first half,
including a 16-16 draw at 12:32, St. Mary's finally pulled away
from the visitors with a 35-15 run to boast its biggest lead of
51-31 at 2:58 behind the consistent play of
Spencer and Davenport who tallied
14 and 13 first-half points, respectively.
Senior center Brandon Altmann (Vienna,
Va./James Madison) paced Mary Washington with a double-double on
game-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds while senior forward
Eric Rolander (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) was
10-of-16 for 22 points, hurting the Seahawks inside for 48 points
in the paint. Senior center Sam Groseclose
(Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and freshman guard Bart
Reese (Herndon, Va./Oakton) each chipped in 10 points.
The Eagles dominated the rebounding battle, 40-25, including 22
to eight in offensive boards.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, January 16 as
St. Mary's hosts Gallaudet University in a conference tilt at 4:00
pm in the Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
