Fort Detrick, Md. - Strong
defensive play and balanced attack propelled the St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's basketball team to their third straight win
with a dominating 66-38 triumph over Hood College Wednesday night.
The Seahawks (5-11, 4-4 CAC) had four players reach double
figures as junior forward Jamie Roberts
(Rockville, Md./Barrie) paced the squad with a game-high 18 points
on 7-of-11 shooting and a 4-of-4 effort from the free throw line.
Joining Roberts in double digits was senior
guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) who added 13 while freshman guard Jasmine
Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) tallied a
season-high dozen points and five assists. Freshman guard
Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) chipped
in 10 to round out the double digit scorers.
The St. Mary's defense forced 32 turnovers while holding the
host Blazers to just 25.0% shooting from the floor as the Seahawks
never trailed from 14:33 mark of the first half.
Hood (3-12, 0-8 CAC) committed 20 miscues in the first half en
route to a 33-16 Seahawk halftime advantage.
Roberts paced the visitors in the first 20 minutes
with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
After trading baskets in the first five minutes of the game, St.
Mary's utilized a 9-0 run to assert its control over the
game. The Blazers responded with a run of their own, going on
a 12-5 run to pull within 18-16 at 5:29 but the Seahawks closed out
the half on a 15-0 run for the 17-point halftime margin.
Hood claimed the control of the glass, 43-38, as senior forward
Jen Willison (Hancock, Md./Hancock) hauled in a
game-high 16 rebounds while adding seven points. Guards
Dyanna Prater (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and
Allyson Lethbridge (Union Bridge, Md./Francis
Scott Key) paced the home team with eight points each.
The Seahawks will wrap up their CAC road trip on the Eastern
Shore this Saturday, January 23 as St. Mary's hopes to split the
season series with Salisbury University. Tip-off is set for
2:00 pm. Salisbury edged the Seahawks, 64-59, on December 9
despite a game-high 26 from Saint-Aubin.
