Salisbury, Md. - Salisbury University only
trailed for 11:04 minutes the entire game as the Sea Gulls posted a
76-66 Capital Athletic Conference victory over No. 16 St. Mary's
College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.
SU senior Greg Palmer (Salisbury, Md./Salisbury
Christian) tied for game-high scoring honors with 24 points on
10-of-17 shooting while senior guard Devin Jones
(Severn, Md./Old Mill) added 18 as Jones connected
on 8-of-12 shots and sophomore forward Lee Righter
(Columbia, Md./Atholton) chipped in 11 off the bench.
Sophomore forward Mike Maczko (Bel Air,
Md./John Carroll) hauled in a game-best 11 rebounds as the Sea
Gulls outrebounded St. Mary's, 42 to 29, including 30 to 14 on
defensive boards. Maczko added six points
and six assists as well.
Salisbury (9-8, 5-4 CAC) opened up with a 16-10 advantage for
its biggest lead of the first half at 13:43 before the Seahawks
battled back by tying the game four times and then finally claiming
their first lead, 31-30, at 2:40 behind a jumper by junior forward
Johann Jones (Severn, Md./Meade Senior).
It looked like St. Mary's (14-3, 7-2 CAC) would head into
intermission with a one-point margin but Jones
connected on a jumper at 00:11 to send his Sea Gulls into the
locker room with a 34-33 advantage.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) paced the Seahawks in the loss, which snapped SMCM's
eight-game win streak, with 24 points while junior guard
Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons)
added 11 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Junior
center Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman)
contributed as well with 10 points and a team-best eight boards.
St. Mary's started the second half by outscoring the home team,
8-6, including six straight to claim its first lead of the half at
16:31 (41-40). Momentum seemed to be swinging the Seahawks
way but the visitors never managed more than a three-point lead,
shooting only 33.3% in the final 20 minutes.
After Righter knotted the contest at 50-all
with a pair of free throws, Salisbury broke the draw with a 17-8 to
lead 67-58 at 4:17. St. Mary's responded with an 8-2 run of
its own to close the gap to three with 1:13 remaining in
regulation. But Palmer's five straight
points in 26 seconds put the game out of reach.
The Seahawks will look to return to the win column next
Wednesday, January 27 as St. Mary's welcomes Marymount (Va.)
University to the ARC Arena for conference action at 8:00 pm.
The Seahawks notched a 63-51 win at Marymount on December 2 as
Griffin (19), Franz (13), and
Jones (10) all reached double figures.
