No. 8/9 Marymount (VA) Hands St. Mary's Conference Setback

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - The nationally-ranked Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team notched their third straight victory Wednesday evening as the Saints posted a 70-54 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary's College of Maryland.

More than half of Marymount's 70 points were a direct result of St. Mary's season-high 33 turnovers.  The Saints (18-1, 9-1 CAC), who are ranked No. 8 by the USA Today ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll and No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, tallied 38 points off the Seahawk miscues.

Junior guard Amanda Billy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers) paced Marymount with 18 points as Billy went 9-of-12 from the free throw line.  Graduate guard Tara Eddy (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was the other Saint in double figures as Eddy finished with 10 points and a game-high five steals.

After a 5-5 start to the game, the Saints used a 14-3 run to boast their biggest lead of the first half, an 11-point margin with 8:23 remaining in the half.  Six straight points from senior guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) sparked St. Mary's to an 8-0 spurt, pulling her squad to the closest they would be all game, 19-16 at 5:32.  Marymount responded with a 10-2 run to build its lead back up to 11 and head into intermission with a 29-21 advantage.

Saint-Aubin carried the Seahawks (5-13, 4-6 CAC) with a game-high 26 points, including 15 first-half points, on 9-of-11 shooting while adding four steals.  Freshman forward Taylor Petrisko (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) helped the home team edge Marymount in rebounding, 33-29, with a game- and season-high nine boards while adding eight points.

Turnovers and personal fouls really troubled the Seahawks tonight with two players fouling out, opening the doors for Marymount to bolster its eight-point halftime lead to 23 points with 5:43 remaining in the game.  St. Mary's shot a season-best 50.0% from the floor for just the third time this season but it was not enough to overcome the miscues of the game.

The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, January 30 as St. Mary's travels to Baltimore to face Stevenson University in conference action at 2:00 pm.  The Seahawks earned a 64-53 triumph over Stevenson back on December 5 as freshman guard Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) poured in a season-high 22 points.
