St. Mary's City, Md. - The No. 23 St. Mary's
College of Maryland men's basketball team returned to the win
column Wednesday night with an 84-61 Capital Athletic Conference
victory over Marymount (Va.) University as the Seahawks have now
won 16 straight regular-season home games at the Athletics &
Recreation Center Arena.
Sophomore guard James Davenport (Owings Mills,
Md./Loyola Blakefield) orchestrated a career-night for himself with
career-highs of 18 points, six rebounds, three steals and three
three-point field goals as Davenport was one of
three Seahawks to reach double figures.
Marymount (11-8, 6-4 CAC) was the last school to defeat the
Seahawks on the home court back on January 30, 2008 with a 72-70
decision as sophomore guard Tarek Ammoury (McLean,
Va./McLean) was the only Saint in double figures with 13 points.
The Saints got off to a quick start with an early 5-0 lead but
that was their largest and only lead of the entire game as St.
Mary's outscored the visitors, 27-12, in the next 12 minutes to
seize control of the game for good. Behind 13 first-half
points from Davenport, the Seahawks (15-3, 8-2
CAC) boasted a 37-26 halftime lead.
Despite shooting 61.9% in the second half, Marymount could not
reel in the Seahawks as the home team owned a double-digit margin
for the game's final 20 minutes. St. Mary's pounded the ball
inside for 36 points in the paint while capitalizing with 25 points
off 23 Saint miscues for the game.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) and junior guard Alex Franz
(Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) also reached double digits for
the Seahawks with 22 and 16 points, respectively.
Franz dished out a game-high eight assists as
well.
With tonight's victory, St. Mary's sits alone at the top of the
CAC standings, one game ahead of Hood College, who dropped a 69-66
decision to Salisbury University tonight.
The Seahawks will look to remain one game ahead of Hood when
SMCM travels to Baltimore to face Stevenson University this
Saturday, January 30 at 4:00 pm. In their first meeting of
the season, St. Mary's broke the century mark with a 103-71 win
over the Mustangs as Griffin poured in a game-high
30 points.
