St. Mary's City, Md. - Despite not having
played in two weeks because of the record snowfall in the
Mid-Atlantic region, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
basketball team finished with five players in double figures as the
Seahawks swept the Capital Athletic Conference series with Hood
College with a 78-55 victory Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Megan Seeman (Frederick,
Md./Linganore) paced St. Mary's (7-13, 6-6 CAC) in scoring as
Seeman matched her career-high of 20 points on
8-of-15 shooting while equaling her season-best of five
rebounds. Freshman guard Pui Sham
(Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) added 14 points and season-highs
of six rebounds and six assists.
With today's victory, the Seahawks moved into fourth place in
the CAC standings, holding a half-game lead on Salisbury
University.
Senior guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie,
Md./Elizabeth Seton) contributed to the Seahawk win with 13 points,
nine boards, and four steals while senior center Alex
Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) recorded her first
double-double of the season on 11 caroms and 10 points along with a
career-best four assists. Junior forward Jamie
Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) rounded out the
double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Behind 14 first-half points from Seeman and 10
from Roberts, the Seahawks roared to a 41-19
halftime advantage as the team connected on 6-of-10 from
downtown. St. Mary's finished shooting 46.7% in the first
half while holding the Blazers to 28.0% shooting. Twenty of
the 41 first-half points came off of 15 Hood turnovers.
Three Blazers (4-18, 1-14 CAC) reached double figures as
freshman guard Dyanna Prater (Gaithersburg,
Md./Gaithersburg) paced the trio with 15 points, seven rebounds,
seven steals, and five assists. Senior forward Jen
Willison (Hancock, Md./Hancock) was next with 13 points
and eight boards while junior Kameran Evans
(Waldorf, Md./CSM) added 10 off the bench.
In the final 20 minutes, the Seahawks just continued to add
their 22-point halftime lead, boasting their largest lead of 34
(72-38) with 5:23 remaining in the game following a lay-up by
freshman guard Taylor Petrisko (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake). The home team shot 51.5% in the second half
to finish the game with a 49.2- field goal percentage for the
afternoon.
The Seahawks will look to maintain its hold on fourth place in
the league standings when St. Mary's welcomes third-place Wesley
College to the ARC Arena this coming Tuesday, February 16 at 6:00
pm. The Seahawks hope to avenge their 72-66 loss at Wesley on
January 9.
