St. Mary's City, Md. - Post players, junior
center Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and
sophomore forward Brian Grashof (Downingtown,
Pa./Downingtown West), both registered career nights in helping to
make it a memorable day for the lone senior, Camontae
Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar), by leading No. 17 St.
Mary's College of Maryland to a convincing 82-63 victory over York
(Pa.) College Saturday afternoon in the battle of No. 1 and No. 2
in the Capital Athletic Conference.
St. Mary's (21-3, 13-2 CAC) captured its second consecutive CAC
regular-season title and the top seed in the upcoming CAC
tournament with its win this evening. Playoffs begin next
Tuesday, February 23 with first round action and as the top seed,
the Seahawks are guaranteed a first-round bye. SMC will host
the winner of No. 4 seed Hood College and No. 5 seed Marymount
(Va.) University in the semifinals February 25 at 7:00 pm.
This evening's win matched the school record for most wins in a
season (21) which was established last season as the 2008-09 squad
finished 21-5. The Seahawks also extended their
regular-season home win streak to 19 in a row while stretching
their win streak to seven straight.
Burum tallied a career-high 18 points and hauled in eight
rebounds while Grashof notched his first career
double-double with career-highs of 17 points and 11 boards.
Junior guard Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal
Gibbons) posted his third double-double of the season with a
season-best 12 assists and 10 points.
Griffin, who was recognized prior to the start of the
game, finished the game with 14 points, four rebounds and four
assists. In two-years, he has amassed 1,035 points having
surpassed the 1,000 point mark February16 in the win over Wesley
College. Griffin has led the team to
consecutive CAC regular-season titles and Pride of Maryland titles
as well as a two-year mark of 42-8 (27-4 CAC).
The Seahawks rolled from the opening tip-off as St. Mary's
commanded a double-digit margin from 4:21-minute mark in the first
half and the entire second period, boasting a 36-22 halftime
advantage. York's only lead of the game came in the first
minute as junior guard Kevin Whaley's (Dover,
Pa./Dover) jumper put the Spartans up 3-2 at 18:58.
St. Mary's biggest lead came in the second half as the Seahawks
owned a 63-36 lead at 11:24. The home team dominated the
paint, tallying 58 points to York's 12, while controlling the
boards as well, 49 to 34.
Whaley paced YCP in the loss with 19 points
while senior guard Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone
Catholic) added 14 points and joined sophomore forward Paul
Kouvaris (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) in grabbing a
team-high nine boards.
The Seahawks will wrap up the regular season tomorrow as St.
Mary's faces University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
at 7:00 pm.
