No. 17 St. Mary's Victorious in Regular-Season Finale; Set School Record for Most Wins in a Season

Fredericksburg, Va. - Balanced scoring, including 32 bench points, was key to No. 17 St. Mary's College of Maryland ending the regular-season with its eighth consecutive victory - a 76-54 win over University of Mary Washington Sunday night.

With their second consecutive Capital Athletic Conference regular-season title under their belt, the top-seeded Seahawks (22-3, 14-2 CAC) enter this week's CAC tournament on an eight-game win streak and owning an unblemished 8-0 record at home.

Guaranteed a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, SMC will host the winner of No. 4 seed Hood College and No. 5 seed Marymount (Va.) University in the semifinals Thursday, February 25 at 7:00 pm.  Hood and Marymount will battle this Tuesday in first-round action.

Tickets for the CAC tournament are as follows: Adults (and senior citizens) - $6, Students - $3.

Sunday's win over Mary Washington set the school record for most wins in a season at 22.  The old mark of 21 wins was matched by the Seahawks' win over York (Pa.) College Saturday and established last season by the 2008-09 squad that finished 21-5.

Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) finished his last regular-season game as a Seahawk with a game-high 14 points while junior guard Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.  Sophomore guard James Davenport (Owings Mills, Md./Loyola Blakefield) hauled in a team-best seven rebounds while chipping in nine points.

The Seahawks shot 41.1% (23-of-56) for the game and were nearly perfect from the charity stripe, making 28-of-32 free throws, including going 22-of-23 in the second half.  St. Mary's boasted a 32-23 halftime lead and quickly built that to a 20+ point margin as the Seahawks opened up the second half with by outscoring the Eagles, 24 to 13, in the first 11 minutes.

Junior guard Qaiser Ahmed (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) paced Mary Washington (9-15, 6-10 CAC) with a dozen points and four steals while seniors Brandon Altmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and Eric Rolander (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) each tallied 11 points.  Altmann also grabbed a game-high eight boards.
