captain Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata)
went 2-for-5 at the plate and junior RHP Barrett
Enix (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) yielded just
four hits as the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team
posted a 5-0 shutout over Cazenovia College Wednesday afternoon.
As the leadoff hitter, Killebrew connected on
his third double of the season, scored two runs, drove in a run,
and stole a base. Enix struck out three and
walked three in five innings of work in improving to 2-0 on the
season.
The Seahawks (3-6) notched a 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Killebrew came home on senior Donald
Redmiles' (Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha) two-out
single. Killebrew had led off with a bunt
single and then stole second.
St. Mary's continued the scoring in the second with three
more runs as senior Lyle Kralle (Great Mills,
Md./Great Mills) crossed home plate on
Killebrew's RBI double after
Kralle led off with a bunt single, stole second
and advanced to third on junior Ian
Simpson-Shelton's (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha)
single up the middle. Simpson-Shelton scored
on junior Brad Shepherd's (Columbia,
Md./Oakland Mills) single while Killebrew came
home when sophomore Nick Urso (Newtown,
Conn./Newtown) was walked by first-year LHP Kory
Besaw (De Kalb Junction, N.Y./Hermon De Kalb) with bases
loaded.
The home team's final run came in the fourth inning when
junior Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown)
scored on junior Bobby Corton's (Owings
Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) single after Bade led off
with a single.
Solid pitching by Enix as well as junior RHP
Mikel Iraola (Kensington, Md./DeMatha) and
sophomore Mike Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford
Academy) in relief kept the Wildcats scoreless. The Seahawk
pitching staff gave up just five hits while fanning five.
Five different Wildcats (1-4) notched singles while
Besaw (0-1) suffered the loss as he gave up four
runs on seven hits with three walks.
The Seahawks will be in sunny Florida for their next contest as
St. Mary's will face University of Wisconsin, Superior at
Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach.
