St. Mary's Falls to Wisconsin-Superior

Box Score

Vero Beach, Fla. – The start to the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team's Spring Break trip involved dropping a two-run decision to University of Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday at Historic Dodgertown.  Superior posted a 6-4 victory as senior TJ Wink (Glenwood City, Wis.) and Dan Lindsey (Rice Lake, Wis.) combined to hold off a Seahawk rally with solid pitching.

Wink improved to 2-0 as he threw 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts, while Lindsey registered his first save of the season with a one-hit outing in 1.1 innings of work along with two strikeouts.

Junior Mitch Loegering (Thunder Bay, Ont.) paced Superior at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort, including two doubles and a triple.  Loegering also scored three runs while senior Brett Olson (Eau Claire, Wis.) was 3-for-4 offensively with an RBI and one run scored.

The Yellow Jackets (2-1) claimed a 1-0 lead in the first inning behind senior Sean Cummings' (Superior, Wis.) lead-off home run.  St. Mary's notched a double play to end the inning and avoid anymore runs.

Superior tacked on two more runs in the third as senior Paul Schlangen (Rice, Minn.) connected on his own homer to give his team a 2-0 lead.  Loegering gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 run cushion as he scored on sophomore Joe Ahrens' (Worthington, Minn.) single after getting on base with a double and advancing to third on a single by Olson.

Senior Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) helped the Seahawks (3-7) cut the deficit to two with a lead-off home run in the fourth.

Superior added its fourth run in the fifth as Loegering scored an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by junior Mike Labelle (Thunder Bay, Ont.) after hitting a lead-off single, advancing to second on a passed ball and making it to third on a single by Ahrens.

St. Mary's made it a one-run game in the sixth as Rabon scored on a ground out by junior Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) after being hit by a pitch, stealing second and advancing to third on a double by junior Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown).  Baden picked up the second run of the inning following an RBI single by senior Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills).

Superior responded with two runs in the seventh as Loegering scored on a single by Olson after leading off with a triple.  Olson then scored on a Seahawk error.

Sophomore Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) kept St. Mary's rally alive in the eighth with a two-out solo home run.  Lindsey came in relief and got the final out to cut the Seahawks' rally short.  Lindsey then notched two strikeouts and a ground out in the ninth to seal the win as St. Mary's left three on base.

Senior Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) was saddled with the loss as Gill gave up four runs (three earned) on 11 hits while striking out five Yellow Jackets.  Baden and Corton tallied two hits to pace the St. Mary's offense.
