Vero Beach, Fla. – A
bases-loaded double by junior Ryan Allison
(Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) broke open a tight
game and powered the Central (Iowa) College baseball team to a 10-4
win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Tuesday.
Allison's blow highlighted a five-run
ninth inning for the Dutch who improved to 6-2. Central also
got two hits from juniors Jarred Lackey
(Somerton, Ariz./Cibola) and Tony
Miller (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption).
Junior RHP Caleb Rangel (Rock Island,
Ill./Alleman Catholic) picked up the win after throwing 7.0 innings
with four strikeouts and two walks, allowing three runs on six
hits.
St. Mary's (3-9) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first
inning as senior Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall,
Md./La Plata) crossed home plate on a sac fly by junior
Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) after
Rabon got on base with a triple to right field.
Central took a one-run lead in the second inning as the Dutch
scored two runs following back-to-back RBI singles from senior
Jason Hassman (Nora Springs, Iowa/NSRF) and
freshman Allen Mann (Marshalltown,
Iowa/Marshalltown).
The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the second to knot the
contest at 2-2 as junior Brad Shepherd's
(Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) RBI single allowed senior Jon
Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) to score after
Gill got on base with a double.
St. Mary's then reclaimed the lead in the fourth as senior
Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) scored
on a sac fly by senior Jacen Killebrew (La Plata,
Md./La Plata) after Kralle led off with a single
then stole two bases.
Central took the lead back in the sixth with three runs for a
5-3 advantage as Rangel, who led off the inning
with a single, scored on a sac fly by Allison and
Miller drove in a pair with a double.
The Seahawks closed the gap to 5-4 in the eighth as
Baden scored on a ground out by junior
Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall)
after Baden was hit by a pitch to lead off the
inning.
Eight different players for St. Mary's collected hits as
junior Barrett Enix (Suffolk,
Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) suffered his first loss of the
season, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 5.1
innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column tomorrow
when St. Mary's faces University of Wisconsin, Superior for
the second time this week. Superior claimed a 6-4 triumph in
its first meeting with SMCM on Sunday.
