Severna Park, Md. – Six
players scored for No. 7 Denison University as the Big Red posted a
10-7 non-conference victory over St. Mary's College of
Maryland Wednesday afternoon at the Severn School. Junior
midfielder Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks
School) netted a hat trick and two helpers in leading Denison to
the win.
Sophomores Cory Couture (San Diego,
Calif./Coronado) and Alex Hardt (Dallas,
Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) each scored a pair for Denison
while Couture dished out one assist as well.
St. Mary's (3-3) notched a 2-1 lead after the first period
as midfielders Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Saint John's) and Ryan Alexander
(Laurel, Md./Pallotti) gave their team the edge.
The Big Red (3-0) claimed the lead for good in the second
quarter as the Denison defense forced four turnovers and held the
Seahawks to just four shots while the DU offense tacked on four
unanswered goals. Couture tallied
back-to-back goals in a 23-second span as his team headed into
halftime with a 5-2 advantage.
Alexander paced the Seahawks in scoring with a
hat trick and an assist while junior attackman Dennis
Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) found the back of the
net twice at his old stomping grounds.
Denison outscored the Seahawks, 4-1, in the third stanza as
Smith struck twice.
Alexander tallied St. Mary's lone goal at
10:54.
The Seahawks forged a late rally in the fourth period with a 4-1
run but time ran out as St. Mary's cut its six-goal deficit
in half with 1:09 left to play. Rosson, who
was quiet all game, was finally able to beat sophomore goalie
Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Saint
Anthony's) with his two goals of the game.
Denison rattled off 50 shots to the Seahawks' 29 while the
Big Red captured the ground ball battle, 32-19, as senior
midfielder Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola
Academy) scooped up a game-high eight and won 10-of-17 face-offs.
Shannon finished the contest with eight saves
and two ground balls while junior goalie Stu
Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) picked up 11
saves, two ground balls and one caused turnover for St.
Mary's.
The Seahawks return to action next Wednesday, March 24 as St.
Mary's kick off Capital Athletic Conference action with
Marymount (Va.) University at 4:00 pm at Seahawk Stadium.
