Vero Beach, Fla. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team notched their fourth straight loss Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks suffered another setback to University of Wisconsin-Superior – this time a 12-5 decision at Historic Dodgertown. Junior Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) had a solid afternoon for the Seahawks (3-10) but it was not enough to lift his team to the win. Baden went 4-for-4 with a pair of triples, driving in two runs and crossing home plate three times himself.
Baden connected on a two-out triple before scoring on a single by junior Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) to give St. Mary's 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Yellow Jackets (5-1) claimed a 2-1 edge in the first as Superior capitalized on a Seahawk error and a balk.
The Seahawks evened up the score in the third as first-year John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) led off with a triple and then scored on Baden's sacrifice fly to leftfield.
St. Mary's claimed the lead in the fifth when Baden connected on a two-out single and then scored on a single by junior Mark Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown).
Superior exploded for five runs on six hits in the fifth to break open the game. Senior Brett Olson (Eau Claire, Wis.) picked up a two-run double as Olson finished the game with a 2-for-4 effort with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and another pair in the eighth. Senior Sean Cummings (Superior, Wisc.) and junior Mike Labelle (Thunder Bay, Ontario) both connected on three hits to pace their team at the plate.
