Sophomore Ben Chestnut (Bettendorf,
Iowa/Bettendorf) connected on the would-be game-winning hit in the
bottom of the seventh to lead the Central (Iowa) College Dutch to a
7-6 triumph over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Thursday
at Historic Dodgertown.
Chestnut tallied an RBI double to right field
to score junior Ryan Allison (Rock Island,
Ill./Rock Island), who had led off with a single to left
center. Chestnut finished the contest with
3-for-4 effort at the plate while Central received two hits from
Allison and sophomores Mike
Furlong (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) and Josh
Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township).
Senior LHP Doug Eisenman (Grundy Center,
Iowa/Grundy Center) did his part to help preserve the one-run win
as Eisenman recorded his second save of the season
with 1.1 innings of work in relief. After the Seahawks scored
two runs to the cut the deficit to one in the eighth,
Eisenman came in with two outs and gave up a walk
before getting a ground out to close out the inning. He then
secured the save with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
Sophomore RHP Joel Pulliam (Des Moines,
Iowa/Lincoln) recorded the win for Central, pitching 5.0 innings
with five walks and two strikeouts while yielding three runs (two
earned) on three hits.
Central (8-2) staked a 2-1 advantage heading into the third
inning when the Dutch tacked on two more runs for a three-run
cushion.
The Seahawks (3-11) responded with two runs in the fourth to
close the gap to 4-3 as senior Lyle Kralle (Great
Mills, Md./Great Mills) came home on a ground out by junior
Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall)
while senior Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La
Plata) crossed home plate on a two-out single by junior
Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown).
The Dutch regained their three-run margin in the fifth with two
runs before St. Mary's cut it back to a two-run shortfall in
the sixth as Killebrew scored when
Corton reached on fielder's choice after
Killebrew reached base with a lead-off double.
Senior Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) took
the loss on the mound, giving up six runs (one unearned) on 10 hits
with three strikeouts and one walk in 5.0 innings.
Killebrew finished as the Seahawk leader at the
plate with a 2-for-4 effort and two runs scored while sophomore
Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) drove in three
runs, including notching a two-run, two-out triple in the eighth.
The Seahawks hope to put an end to their five-game losing skid
tomorrow when St. Mary's takes on New England College for its
final game at Historic Dodgertown.
