St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior
attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn)
tallied game-highs of four goals, two assists, and six points to
help the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse
team rebound from last week's loss with a 10-4 triumph over
Marymount (Va.) University in the Capital Athletic Conference
opener for both squads Wednesday afternoon.
Midfielders Ryan Alexander (Laurel,
Md./Pallotti) and Chris Morihlatko (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) and sophomore attackman J.P. Lennon
(Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) each notched two goals
apiece while Alexander assisted on
Lennon's man-down goal in the second period.
It was all even at 2-2 after the first 15 minutes of play as the
teams traded goals. Rosson scored twice for
the Seahawks while juniors Danny Carson
(Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and Chris Wascak
(Millersville, Md./Old Mill) found the back of the net for
Marymount.
St. Mary's (4-3, 1-0 CAC), who received votes in this
week's USILA Division III Coaches Poll, broke open the tied
game in the second quarter with a 4-0 run to head into halftime
with a 6-2 advantage as Rosson notched the first
goal of the period and then assisted on
Alexander's first goal of the day at 1:43 to
close out the first half.
Wascak finished with two goals while
Carson and senior defenseman Eric
Fernandez (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) each picked up one
goal and graduate midfielder Alex Curley
(Richmond, Va./Thomas Dale) added an assist.
The scoring drought for the Saints continued in the third stanza
as St. Mary's outscored the visitors, 3-0, as
Morihlatko started the scoring with an unassisted
goal at 12:14 followed by an unassisted Rosson
goal at 8:13. Alexander closed out the
scoring at 1:59 off a feed from Rosson.
Marymount (3-6, 0-1 CAC) got back on the board in the fourth
period as the Saints outscored the home team, 2-1, with man-up
goals from Fernandez and Wascak
while Lennon tallied a man-up goal of his own
in-between the two Marymount scores.
First-year Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Saint John's) dominated the face-off for the Seahawks,
winning 14-of-16 as Mitchell went 9-of-9 between
the second and third periods. St. Mary's outhustled the
Saints on groundballs, 42-24, as junior midfielder Colin
Gload (Parkton, Md./Hereford) scooped up a game-high eight
loose balls, just one shy of career-best.
Junior goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St.
Paul's) picked up nine saves, six ground balls and one caused
turnover for St. Mary's while sophomore Ross
Fernandez (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) made 10 stops for the
Saints with three ground balls and two shots.
The Seahawks return to action next Wednesday, March 31 as St.
Mary's hosts Wesley College in conference action at 4:00 pm
in Seahawk Stadium.
