St. Mary's City, Md. - St. Mary's College of
Maryland stood steadfast in the last three innings to hold on for
the 4-3 victory over Stevenson University in Capital Athletic
Conference baseball action Friday afternoon as the Seahawks finally
got their home season underway.
Junior RHP Barrett Enix (Suffolk,
Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) pitched a no-hitter in his 4.0
innings of relief with three strikeouts and just one walk in
leading the Seahawks (1-3, 1-3 CAC) to victory and picking up his
first win of the season.
Junior Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland
Mills) paced St. Mary's at the plate as the designated hitter with
a 2-for-4 performance, including a double, and a run scored.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning
with a two-run single by senior Donald Redmiles
(Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) after Stevenson's junior RHP
Josh Brundige (Brookeville, Md./East Jessamine)
loaded the bases by walking the first three SMCM batters.
Stevenson (2-1, 0-1 CAC) responded in the second with two runs
of its own to even the game at 2-all. Following a leadoff
walk by senior George Papuchis (Damascus, Md./Good
Counsel), junior Jeff Bihy (Baltimore, Md./Eastern
Tech) connected on a one-out RBI double to score
Papuchis. Bihy tied the
game up as he scored on the ground out to second by sophomore
Joe Robak (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall).
The Mustangs claimed a one-run advantage in the third for their
first lead of the game. Junior Cody
Schuchman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) led off with a
single before advancing two bases on a Seahawk error.
Schuchman then scored on the sacrifice fly by
senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf, Md./Westlake).
Stevenson protected its one-run lead into the sixth when the
Seahawks finally broke through with a pair of runs. Senior
Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) and
Shepherd both scored in the inning as
Kralle came in on a fielder's choice and
Shepherd crossed home plate as a result of a
sacrifice fly by senior Justin Rabon (Charlotte
Hall, Md./La Plata).
Brundige (0-1) suffered the setback on the
mound as he gave up four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work
with six walks and four strikeouts.
Bihy was the Mustang leader at the plate with a
2-for-4 effort as both hits were doubles while adding a run and an
RBI.
The Seahawks will continue their three-game series with
Stevenson tomorrow afternoon with two seven-inning games at the
Hawk's Nest.
